Nice buck! How many tags can you get there?

So, for the first weekend of deer season Fe Boy is not grounded. Saturday morning we hunted one of our father-son/buddy ladder stands at a pinch point in the hardwoods where the creek runs up against a fairly steep ridge and is immediately bordered but pasture. We figured we would catch something heading back into the woods from feeding in the fields at night; NOPE!

After lunch, we decided to go and hunt the clear-cut; it always pays off and Grandma has given an order for meat! I figured I would let my son (12) sit in the tripod and I would sit on the hill behind him in my ghillie suit and act as spotter.

The weapon and partial view to the right:

The other direction:

We saw a few does milling around later in the afternoon and about 45 minutes before dark, a small fork horn enters the clear-cut (about 1:00 in the photo) and starts feeding on the honeysuckle growing at the edge. Of course the boy has it in the cross-hairs the moment in appears but I told him to be patient and wait as the rut is in full swing and the bucks have really been moving lately. A few minutes later, a larger bodied deer entered and began to feed toward the other buck. It had a really ugly, broken rack and was perfect for the cooler so I told Ian to pick his shot and let him have it. The deer was facing toward us but quartering away to it's right side, he made a pretty good heart shot but at 120+/- yds., he hit it a bit low. The buck was obviously hit hard, ran a quick circle to his right heading back to the edge of the woods and stopped quartering away again. The deer looked like it was going to make it into the woods if it started moving again so I told Ian to put another one in him. No sooner than I gave the command, he fires and the deer drops like a rock! He put the gun on "safe", loaded another round in the chamber and kept the gun on him in case it got up (you can't teach that stuff").

After about ten minutes I got up and walked down to the tripod, climbed up, gave him a hi-five and congratulated him. I asked if he wanted to wait until dark before we went to check it or go now; now was the answer of course. He climbed down and as we walk around the bluff to the four wheeler, I noticed another buck moving across the clear-cut about 200 yds. to the north. I told Ian that there were bucks everywhere and we needed to go back to the tripod and wait until dark before retrieving his deer.

This time he sat on the hill behind the tripod and let me hunt; so kind isn't he? As we were on a meat mission, everything was fair game today. With about 5 minutes of shooting light remaining, an 8 pointer appears at the edge of the woods (right were the other deer entered) and as light was fading fast I decided to let him have it.

Nothing left now but the cleaning!

No hair jokes!
Only a few more weeks and he will finally get his hair cut and donate it to Locks of Love!

Took this old swamper last weekend.

Saw him 3 times during bow season but he never gave me a shot until gun season.
