Turkey season 2013

I am glad somebody is having some luck, it has been a rough and humbling season for me, missed one 2 weeks ago, no big deal, i did not call him up, just happened to be where him and his hens were going.
A week ago i was hunting at a nearby lake sitting in a boat hunting looking at a gobbler with his hens on a hillside and all of a sudden they decided to fly over, missed him too, today i finally called a good one in, he peeped his head out from behind a big tree 25 yards away and turned around and left before i could get a shot.

For years i have been very successful, usually get 3, sometimes 4, one year i got 2 with one shot, oh well, as grandma used to say " the sun dont shine on the same hog all the time"

I have modified my schedule since last season: 3 on, 1 off, 3 on, 7 off. Nights. The freezer is empty and I'm about to load a crap-ton of shotgun ammo. I just added the CO waterfowl dates (5 areas for duck alone, all within 3 hours of me) to the Google calendar along with the pheasant seasons for ND and SD and my plains whitetail tag (deer and ducks). Can't wait for Sunday... well, Wednesday afternoon when I wake up from my stretch. Grouse first, but definitely a dove trip soon. I have a very good feeling that the new pup will be ready for our October duck opener at 5 months, but we'll be visiting a trainer first to make sure I've done my job with her.

Happy nearly September, everyone!

Daughter Snow is now a 13yo with a little teenage angst.

However - she still wants to join me deer hunting. Looking forward to it - Oct 10 - good daddy/daughter time. May even bring up the wifeys XT225 for animal retrieval & mid day riding lessons.

I'm a meat hunter however the ranch in the area where I trade fencing for hunting rights has an under 18 anterless hunt. Thus Daughter Snow has a "hair" tag. (If its got hair she can shoot it.)

We may work a bit harder this year - there are some big bucks up in the hills.

Sounds like a great time. I wish I could find a rancher to agree to something like that. Most of the private lands in California sell hunting rights to guides, who turn around and charge $300 - $700 per day to hunt.

I have a couple of promising spots picked out on public land, but both are 6 hour drives each way. The last time I went, my friend smoked cigarettes the whole time, doing a wonderful job of scaring off the animals.

HCH,

It is pretty good quality time with the Scooter- hunting is a small part of the equation - hard to get a situation where you can really talk with the nippers. This is one of those times for me. Check out post 316 for last years tale. Glad Lucy decided to hunt this year - still need to sight in our rifles but otherwise are good to go.

Re: land - yeah, its a posted small ranch adjacent to landlocked BLM in an area managed for big bucks. Each of us are comfortable w/ the fencing for access trade. Fencing the steeps still beats me up - real work.

You need to work to get on a big animal here. My optics are not great nor do I own a spotting scope & tripod - pretty handy. Usually I try to pull a doe permit and call it good. Still a meat hunter at heart.

Good luck this season.

Grouse! (My first and hers, too)

They were delicious fried in olive oil with home fries and peppers from the garden.

Getting Ready in Potatoland

Got out of bed early today and headed to Garden Valley. After breakfast we sighted the .243 & .300 Win Mag.

A little scope adjustment needed but decent groups at 100 yards.

No one else on the range this morning. Daughter Snow is good to go.

Looks like a BDL but a middle weight barrel, is that not the stock barrel?

I finally tried shooting from my kayak. Why didn't I do this sooner?

Ten birds this weekend!

Took my Darcy out for some exercise, met Big Cuz over in WA for our annual bird trip.

Which also involves various gourmet tailgate dinners such as elk stew in the dutch oven with cornbread
