We have off road, and dualsport bikes. We also own Wees and can do all pavement or less technical (slow) on our wees (example: Kendall skyline or pikes peak rds).

i like your bike setup, ive got a 07CR250 smoker set up for trails, an 06 FE650 with a 2moto kit on it and an 02 GG280. sounds like we should get together and ride sometime. i just did the elkhorn crest on the trails bike and it was pretty fun. (ive been down there on my 250 but my other buddy was riding his trial so i figured we mights as well both ride em). i like the idea of getting some wally world guys together to ride, im always looking for people to ride with. we did a wed night ride last year and met up a johnsons motorsports (im part owner) we should get a weekly or bi-weekly thing going and set up a meeting place.

Just got back from riding the South Fork. What an awesome day riding!! Showed Steve Fuchs the new trail at Deduct Pond.

I remember Mark talking about the Wednesday night rides you guys were doing last year. It sounded like fun but never was able to get off work early enough.

What was the altitude you were riding at when it wouldn't restart?
Remember the "airport" @ wally world is under 1000'!
It may not mean that you need a "rebuild" it could just mean that it needs to be jetted closer to start with and make sure that the air filter is CLEAN & not over oiled etc. That's where I would start, just IMHO.

Altitude was 4519, so it was up there. I bought the bike in Seattle, so it's no doubt jetted for sea level. All that said, as I understand the operation of a CV carb, you might experience some issues at altitude, they shouldn't be as severe as this. My V-star has non-CV Mikuni carbs and it did reasonably well on Logan Pass in Glacier NP when I was there.

Fact is, the bike is running way rich. It's pukes black smoke on heavy acceleration, which is not a good sign. Mileage is 26,xxx, which is in the range where folks with these F650s can start having carb issues. If I'm going to pull the carbs for a possible rejet, then I may as well give them a good cleaning, replace the O-rings and possibly a few of the other parts that tend to wear out.

Anyone here have experience working on Mikuni CV carbs? I understand this carb is similar to the Suzuki GS500E carb.

Thanks much. I'll keep that in mind. Before I tear into the carbs, I'm going to try a couple other things - make sure idle mix screws are properly set at 3.5 turns out, pull the tops to check the status of the diaphragms. Word has it they are often at fault. If all else fails, I'll pull the carbs and then decide if I want to tear into them or have someone with more experience than me do it.

A delicious change of pace with marinated kababs of chicken and beef, hummis and pita bread, green olive tapenade, and Morrocan eukkah, dates, golden raisins, pistascios, assorted fresh fruits, cucumber sauce etc... GREAT!

Always loved Martha (that jailbird).

Actually as it turns out, Tom (the organizer and Sound Rider man himself) also publishes a food related rag. So the man does know his way around an apetizing plate . He complied the dinner menu for that evening, as I said before not your usual rally grub - a welcomed chenge of pace from the usual!

Now y'all have me hungry for some tabooleh, hummus and marinated lamb!!! Unfortunately, there aren't any good Moroccan restaurants anywhere near Walla Walla.

In another direction, I hope I'm not being premature here, but I think I may have figured out the running rich condition. If I'm right, it's a fairly easy (and cheap) fix. Spent 15 mins. on the phone with the Seattle BMW dealer that serviced the bike last fall. First off, they had the carbs off and tore into them. If a rebuild was in order, they would have done it. They didn't so I don't think I need to do it now.

One thing that came up is that a prior owner had removed the snorkel, which controls airflow to the airbox. Increased air flow means increased pressure on the intake side. These carbs are constant velocity carbs. The differential in air pressure could result in the carb needles being pushed up more than they should, resulting in more fuel being sucked in. Similar result to using larger main jets. The needles have clips that adjust the level they sit at in the carbs. I can get at them with carbs in the bike and just move them a notch. I'm hoping this is what the issue is and that it'll take care of it.
