400k day ride Lake Simcoe watershed with a Cessna Flight

I went to a family event yesterday. The wife and son took the car, and I rode up on the bike.

I used Mapsource to find as many dirt and secondary roads as possible which resulted in my taking an hour longer than the family car.

We live in the Kitchener Waterloo area, and I was heading to Lake Simcoe North East of us.

I passed through an area called the Holland Marsh.

It's an over 7000 acre former wetland that was drained in the 30"s and is used to produce vegetables. It's often referred to as muck farming as the soil is so dark and rich.

The Holland Marsh is the lowest part of the Lake Simcoe watershed.

I was on the Canal road, which separates the Drainage Canal and the farm fields. It kind of reminded me of the everglades with large trees standing in water. We've had a bit of rain here the last few days.

There's talk of making changes to the canal road as people have died driving thier cars off the road into the drainage canal

A few shots of the farm area including a google view

Eventually I ended up on the east Shores of lake Simcoe

And then finally my destination a man made lagoon system on lake Simcoe appropriately called Lagoon City.

Part of the days plan was to go for a flight, as Bob owns a plane which he keeps a mile up the road.

I thought I would share a couple of the shots from there as well.

Bob purchased this 1971 Cessna from the original owner who decided to quit flying when he was in his nineties. This plane is in pristine condition.

The Hanger and workshop

This place is also a salvage yard with parts shipped all over the world

A few more shots of the Cessna

The first flight included my two nephews and my 16 year old son

Here's a really short vid of the plane landing on the grass strip, in hindsight I was probably a little stupid to be standing so close to the runway. I think the wings passed by my head by about 10 feet.

Then there was a problem, as the instruments indicated an intake leak, so that was the end of the flights for the day. I didn't get a chance to take any photo's from the air.

So that's it a great day none the less.

Not on that plane, there are a number of other planes that use the property.

There is whats called a float basin, a small runway of water where the float planes take off and land from.

While we were there this float plane took off from the float basin
