A hydrolock that finally let go 6 months later. It made no noise and ran perfectly until everything suddenly stopped.

In the "middle of nowhere MT."
Not too gory, until I pulled it down further...valve went south and hung out with the piston...

Unfortunately no roadside repair possible this time.

Cry toasted!

OK, I wasn't sure if maybe this fit into the engine damage pics thread, or maybe the bike "abuse" thread? Or maybe a new "wasted bikes" thread? Anyway, these pics are not for the squeamish. They were taken the morning after a fire started in our attached garage where our Buell lightnings were parked.

Here lie our lightnings, just to the right of the dodge caliber. Look for the undermount mufflers...

And here is a blurry close up of one of them. Believe it or not the insurance co. had what was left of the engines hauled away along with what was left of our cars.

The results of my botched KLR Doohickey replacment. Watch those torque values during reassembly!!! Starter gears are not ment to spin at highway speeds. It did do a good job of oiling my left leg!

How my bike had to come home as a result.

Being a apposed twin I would think it had to go east...or is that west?

I had a similar unintended starter engagement on the way to Alaska in '06. It stayed inside the cases though and when I pulled the starter off that night the guts poured out like sand.

Bullet proof? I don't think so...

My '08 KLR jumped time a few months back. Here are the results.

Note the shadow.

That's a 4.5mm allen in there, with room to spare.

What it looked like from the inside.

Good news is it's now a happy 685.
