Whitetop station......

The dropping off point for van loads of bicyclists that "coast" the 17 miles back to town on the Virginia Creeper Rail Trail.

But I had another destination in mind, one that I knew would be an "out-n-back" to the top of the mountain where the state lines of NC, VA and TN all come together.

....but first I have to get past these guys.

Yep....there's that snow I mentioned earlier.

And that house is my destination.....

Although the road isn't really too rough this would be the first test for that newly modified shock. It had been working fine up to this point but everything had been pretty smooth, even the dirt.

Nobody was home so I decided to take in the view and snap a few shots of the 360* views.....it was windy up there too.

Cloudy and hazy but thankfully dry.

The place where all three states come together should be up past that overgrown orchard.....

Pretty close to the clouds here!

Everything was great up until I got back on the bike to up through that orchard and clunk! clunk!

Closer inspection shows that my new shock has spewed out all it's oil!!

It's gonna be a fun ride home on that pogo stick!

Time to turn around.....more snow.

Heading back down.....

Exploration is over for the day ....but I still have at least 150 miles to ride back to the house!

Was this pic taken at the end of Rock Fence Rd? And were you trying to connect to Denny Rd?

Hate it about the shock.
Good thing you went ahead and put it to the test.

If you ever find yourself in West Jefferson slide around back to Second Street and stop in and see my friend Julie at her coffee shop.

She used to work where I do and left 6 years to live the dream!

Tell I sent you and see if she kicks you out or not?

Meandering home after having a nice big sandwich and bowl of soup along with my expresso at the coffee shop. It really did go good together.

Re-energized and back to my old tricks of looking at abandoned buildings.

7PM...heading towards the city @ 15 mph!?!?

I don't know why I thought that this would be a good idea!

But the slow-motion allowed me to enjoy a nice sunset over Lake Norman.

While at the West Jefferson Coffee House I was able to get a hold of my shock people and a new custom shock to replace my failed rebuild has already been sent at no additional charge.

I'm very pleased that they want to make things right!

Cross your fingers with me that the next one works out.

I think you got the "Tri-state tree line" on the way up.

Well, I scouted it last year but I couldn't find as much of the dotted line as you did.

Looks like I need to go back up there.

I'm pretty sure the arrow then points to the tree that sits in all three states, lore has it that Tom Dooley was hung there.

OK it's another beautiful day again today so after lunch I'm pretty sure a ride of some sort is in order.

I hope to get back up there next week. I will be looking for the white oak where Tom Dula was hanged.

Interesting info-

"Gillam Bannon Grayson, Col. Grayson nephew from Laurel Bloomery, along with Henry Whittier went to Memphis to record the Ballad of Tom Dooley for Victor Records on October 1, 1929. It became popular in the late 1950s when the Kingston Trio re-released the song. This ballad tells the story."

"Laurel Bloomery is just a rocks throw away."

Sorry about your luck with shock on the DL.

Good luck! You know how well folk lore, history and boundary lines go together. That tree could be anywhere within 50 miles of Pond Mtn!

I took "the pig" out for a little spin this afternoon as it was just too nice out to spend too much time working in the yard.

Kinda got the rule of thirds upside down in my flyby of this tidy little farm. You know the saying.....you get what you pay for....just trying to make sure y'all get your moneys worth.

I even jumped in on a cruiser parade for a little while.

Windmills are not just for Kansasians you know.

the pig out of it's pen

weekend off? or is tomorrow race day?

I wasn't sure where to go this afternoon and ended up just putzing around doing the same old stuff.

There's kind of a cool old waterwheel back in there...

It'll be completely hidden by greenery very soon.

I hope somebody already found any goodies that may have been hiding here as I don't think they'll be goodies much longer.

Let's change the subject from the old and dead to some springtime flowering back to life.

That yellow is a bit overpowering, is it not!
