I thought that my scouting for this year's RDV was wrapped up until a little more time was spent looking at some county maps.

But after last weekends severe weather and another edition en route it was decided that it would have to wait!

Even though that wasn't forecast to hit this area until later on in the night, a shorter more local ride was more appealing.

You can't get much more local than your own front yard!

The azaleas blooms are on their way out now but that big purple one starts a little later.

Those with allergies are still miserable.....but I love this time of year!

I thought that this would be a nice shot with all the primary colors but I got the exposure wrong on the sky didn't I.
Oh well....life goes on.

An adventurous mood with a need to explore took control.....

Which came first, the road sign or the gate? No matter, neither one is there today!

It didn't go far before it was nothing more than a faint track across a pasture but, how could I not oblige?

Hmm, freshly dug out creek crossing!

Too bad my path to it was blocked by an electric fence!

I forgot something so I had to run back to the house!

A victim of gambling law changes, this former video poker casino now sits vacant on the state line.

I should have tugged on the handle to see if it was open....can't see a latch of any sort.

Looks like the doorman is at least giving some birds a home.

I mean really? what else can you do with a place like this?

There's businessmen out there with ideas for revitalization though.

Still in explore mode, this atv tracked gas line was irresistible.

Little piggy Wee Strom says "walk it first! I see mud!"

But I could ride trails like that all day long on the little piggy!

Ahhhhh that aint nothin'

It's just getting a run at it around the mud hole that may suck.

I think that this is the Broad River....but I aint putting any money on it.

The next climb out from the riverbed looked a little more technical.....but while I'm here walking.....

Atop that little hill was this rustic hunting camp.......

......behind a fancy big brick house!

I bet that the camp was there first!

dadburnblasted hooligans!!

Do you ever start out on "just a little spin" and suddenly find yourself seemingly on the opposite side of the globe?

Hey! HappyRider!!

This one's for you!

I need to take the time to shoot in manual mode more....stupid white sky!

They've been doing things the same way here for quite some time I bet!

The skies were darkening and the wind was brisk but the radar still looked clear.

fly-bys

I've ridden this road numerous times and usually just rail this section of turns but I thought that since I'm getting old and slow anyway I'd just roll through with the shutter button flapping today.

Friggin' rush hour traffic!!

I parked the camera and rode some sahweet twisties and didn't even care to take a pic for any of you bums.

Then I rode right past the alphabet store......

....and found a parking spot right next to La Strada's deck overlooking Lake Lure.

Chimney Rock is obscured by the mountain behind it at this angle and "dirty dancing" is below.....

I thought that I would be having a lonely lunch.....

.....I thought wrong!

After lunch I just putzed around the courtyard below for a little while......

I spied a new road behind the resort........nothing built up there yet but here's a closer look at a still obscured Chimney Rock.

...and the view from a future driveway, I presume.

Now I'm not sure if "The Bottomless Pools" are just still closed for the season or flat out closed.

They really are bottomless!!

Still just bumming around the Lake Lure area......

Hickory Nut Falls

And a little bit better angle of Chimney Rock!

(yeah it looks like the mtn has a little pecker)

OK...enough goofing around town. Hey look! a state flower!

(can you see it?)

Hey look! a water wheel! ....in a ditch on the side of the road?

I found a dead end road and met a dog, not just any dog....

......a dog with strong political convictions!!

I don't mind exploring dead end roads

In fact it's one of the reasons that I don't spring for a gps.....

....would I still find places like this if I didn't ride "dead ends"?

I mean, what's the point in riding a road if you know that it doesn't go anywhere?

Worse yet.....what if somebody had been home!?!?

Don't worry....this aint Georgia! (sorry Brown Dog)

I just get this strange sense of accomplishment every time I waste a day like this.

Hey redbud!!

I'm back on the SC flatlands at this point.

But really, what's more American than peaches and strawberries?

As I'm just cruising back towards the house in the ever increasing crosswinds that this current front is bringing (a calm day in Kansas) I notice a little historic marker that has never caught my eye before....and it takes me down this road.

The site of the Furnace Mill

The only structures remaining are the wheel itself and the stone damn, aqua duct, some foundations.

Oh yeah...the kids know how to beautify things, don't they.

That was the find of the day......I wonder what I'll stumble across tomorrow?

Those springtime blooms are actually nearing an end here where I live but it's just beginning at higher elevations....

That's right, I went to the grocery store on a Saturday!

Here's a quick sample of the suckage.

Look at the flag....just like a calm day in Kansas.
