Mitas E09 Dakar Tires

As a part of my 21" front wheel project, I purchased some Mitas E09 Dakar tires from mx1canada.com - I must say that they are some awesome looking tires that are a serious competitor to the Continental TKC-80 for about half the price.


Mounted Tire


13mm tread depth


The tires measure as they read - so the 140-80-17 is 1cm narrower than the 150-70-17


The worn 150-70-17 has 30mm clearance to the shock support


The new 140-80-17 has about 25 or 26mm of clearance to the shock support

Took the 1100 GS for a quick ride after installing the rear tire (still have 19" TKC 80 on front - 21" wheel is between Woody's and here) and the traction is fantastic on both asphalt and compact gravel roads.

Now to see how long they will last - but for $120 Canadian which includes overnight shipping - it's a DEAL compared to the TKC 80

E09's are notoriously famous for loosing grip on wet tarmac and you'll burn them if riding mostly on paved roads. They are good when new, but they don't last long......

I rode to work this morning (12km tarmac) in drizzle and +12C weather - so wet roads and no chance to get the tires warmed up. I have a 50% TKC on the front and the new E09 on the rear. I can honestly say that new tire didn't feel weird or anything like that. Mind you I wasn't hammering it in the corners, but I don't ride like that in the rain anyhow. We'll see once I get a few more kilometers on there how well they behave.

I am not expecting mega miles from these tires. If they last as long as a TKC 80 then I will be more than happy seeing how they are half the price.

I changed over my differential this afternoon so I took some photos of my rear tire at 3500km of about 98% medium load highway use at 2.6 bar air pressure. My caliper's ruler bit is a little off, so new is 130.0mm and at 3500km they are at 96.5mm

I have had a few people say these tires suck in the wet and cold. I can say I have experienced no such issues with these tires. I go to work every morning in the wet and darn near freezing temperatures and never had issue bad experiences or felt uneasy with these tires. Rode the Columbia Ice Fields at -2C to +2C and they felt great!

So far, I think the Mitas E-09 Dakar rear tire is much superior to the Continental TKC-80 in both price, wear rate and equal in performance on highway and off-road. Really a win win situation with a decent European made tire... can't say that about the TKCs lately...

The front tire (90/90-21"), I don't like as much - I would say it is half shot at this moment. Way softer than the rear tire... will probably not get the same front tire again.

I greatly prefer th E09 out back relative to the TKC80. I get about double the mileage, the E09 is much better off road, and I have had no issues in the wet with either tire. I do like the TKC80 product and have burned through several sets, but I think the E09 is better all around.

Do you run tubes in your E-09's?

Ive been trying the new rear E10's lately (been through 2 now) and they are terrible

Maybe worth trying an E09?

I do not run tubes with the R12GS, but do use do use tubes everywhere else. The Mitas tires are not great on the front. Perhaps that is your issue. I prefer the MT21 or D606 up front.

I also have a GS and no tubes.
Only referring to rear tyres.
I was asking as I thought the E09 is a tube tyre so wasnt sure if you were using tubes or not.
Only use TKC or Karoo T on the front 19.

Only had issues since switching to the E10 rear.
Wouldnt have another.

I have an Excel 21x1.85 at the front so a tube is necessary there. I have the OE BMW rear wheel and I do run a tube in that as well. The tires are marked TT so I am not taking chances.

I am really impressed with the E09 - at least the rear tire anyhow. The front tire is pretty soft - way softer than the rear. I will post photos this weekend.

I think the price whet up a little since I got it, but at $140 - freight included for a tire that's a pretty sweet deal!

Are you guys are getting with the rear Mitas E09 Dakar Tires twice more mileage than with the rear TKC?
It looks like a TKC front and E09 rear will wear at the same pace.
Do you recommend that combination?

Are the Mitas extremely noisy like the Karoos or they are more like the TKC's?

I am running the TKC front and Mitas E09 rear on my F800 as we speak. Did not put a bunch of analysis into it. It just worked out that way.

The E09 out back is quiet like the TKC.

I don't know, but it wouldn't surprise me if they do. They are in a section of Vancouver where it is a easy hop-skip-and-a-jump to go across the border. Friend of mine runs a VW parts business and makes daily runs to the USA for their orders. When I was in the VW parts business 90% of my business was from the USA... so I would bet MX1 ships to the USA!
