Comparing the Garmin's on garmins website, all ones I have compared show 0 routes for nuvi and the streetpilots. I guess routes are not supported on any of these units. I wonder why ?

I was only referring to the CD. The CD is labeled City Navigator NT, North America v8. I use it on my PC which runs XP. Works fine.

Manual, stored routes are not supported on any of the nuvi or StreetPilot c models. The other StreetPilots allow you to load and save routes on them.

NT will install on Windows XP. Sounds like you should be looking at one of the StreetPilot 2xxx models or the zumo.

I recommened a nuvi 350.. I hope it will be a good gps for him. I'm pretty sure he's already ordered it. Got it for under 400 shipped.

The nuvi 350 is a very good unit but it will NOT do part of what you said he wanted it to do. That's what I based my recommendation on.

What does it not do? it doesn't accept routes from the computer is all i can figure out, and most all of the garmin street gps won't either , except for the high end street pilots.

The Nuvis will not support route planning on the PC using Mapsource. And according to Garmin never will. The only units that support route planning from Garmin are the the Zumo, Quest, Quest 2, Streetpilot 2820 or older Street Pilot 2xxx series and the big Street Pilot units 7XXX series.

I have had several conversations with Garmin about this and they simply do not see the need to provide route planning for all the units as the majority of people just plug in a destination and Autoroute and do not plan their routes on a PC and then down load it to the GPS. I do not agree with their marketing strategy even though the Nuvi is a great unit and does a great job of autorouting. I use it inthe car and love it. Of course for us bikers the ROUTE is much more important than the destination.

THe work around of using POI's can work but is a real pain. I bought a Nuvi for just under $400 and it is a great deal at that. Maybe someday the Zumo 550 can be had for sub $500 but for the time being its seems to be stuck at about $670.

You also can't view tracks from the nuvi. All StreetPilot 2xxx and the StreetPilot 7200 do what you originally asked for.

It doesnt record your track? does it track as you go? can you then later save that track to the PC?

Don't take this the wrong way, but you can actually download the owners manual and read through it before you buy. That might eliminate a few of the "surprises" regarding what a particular unit does or doesn't do.
