let me claify that a bit, I have collected about 150 samples myself. I have recieved about 75 samples via this thread, and have recieved about 30 samples from other firends. The rest I acquired via trades with other sand collectors. BUT this thread has been very productive....I tried via other forums that I subscribe to (facebook, craigslist, harley forums, geology forums, etc) but this one has been the only one that was actually fruitful. In fact it IS staggeringly productive. Plus most samples people from ADV have sent have been generous enough to use to trade with other sand collectors. Thus the samples from this thread really do multiple like loaves and fish. And some of the sand from here have proven highly desirable to other collectors. Specifically the sand from Afghanistan and Kuwait, as well as sand from Tasmania. But don't discount the value of anyones local "ordinary" sand. To a collector even the stuff that you track into your house is collectable. And yes I have a data base and it takes a fair amount of time to organize it all.....but I did still manage to tear the motor apart on my ROad King this week, trying to get it ready for summer adventures. HA HA I will be gettin more samples myself!!!! In short, this thread has produced sand beyond my wildest dreams. ADV rider is an awesome forum all around!!! Also, just to let you know, in addition to displays of sand from around the world at my school. Last night I did a forensic lesson, the story was that Mickey Mouse had been murdered and the students had to analyze sand sample to determine if sand found on suspects matched the murder scene. They really ate it up. SO.....a BIG Thanks to everyone who even considered sending me sands. and keep em coming......

30ml (about a fild cannister) is ideal, more is awesome because I can use excess to trade with other collectors...

I couldn't devote the time scanning this thread to see if you have these already but;
I would be happy to offer sand from the north and south shores of Long Island, NY (I live pretty much smack in the middle, 50 miles east of NYC). They are somewhat famous for their diversity .. dark round pebbles and gravel on the north shore and fine ground beige sand on the south. Like two different worlds. Once it warms up just a little bit more, I'd be happy to also collect a sample from a beach around the shores of Manhattan or Queens, as well as a sample from the very Eastern tips of this island, the southern Mountauk point and northern Orient point. And while we're at it, how about right in the middle of the two.. Flanders bay @ Riverhead, ny? Please send me a PM if you have any interest in these .... I would not mind the errand/excuse to go out and ride one bit .. nor even collecting more samples than I've already mentioned, in the long term. FOR SCIENCE! |

Does it have to be a 1/4 cup? I have a small coke bottle of sand I picked up in Northern Malawi when I was travelling there in 1988. I want to keep it for obvious reasons - site of my first (and only!) bike crash on a R75/6:)
I would be willing to send you a smaller sample if that's ok. I just need to keep most of it!
