I do love Gauley season, even if I'm not paddling the river.

Saturday morning was still wet. Heck, the whole weekend was wet. Instead of fooling around trying to find more interesting ways to get to Richwood, I pounded out 39. I was in town by 9:00.

Brock's Bridge

I headed up the South Fork of the Cherry. The tresspassing signage is a bit more aggro this year. I found Blizzard Creek this time, and headed up to the top.

With all of the roads built by Plum Creek, navigating is tricky, but I did find my way over to Droop Mountain.

Dean's Hollow is an out and back.

"Just let me out of here, and I'll go get that bear."

It's waaaay too wet to go after TWVT Alt behind Watoga. Time for plan B.

On my way over to the Greenbrier, I saw a large red tailed hawk swoop down out of a tree (it adjusted it's flight path to give me wide berth) and grab a grey squirrel. I even heard the squirrel scream. Very cool. Also, don't pick up hitchhikers on Denmar Road.

I ran around Leonard, Cordova, Trout to check out those roads.

Lobelia Road, supermoto madness.

The owner of the above dogs told me that I could run several different routes Cherry Low Place over to Cold Knob, so it was back up whatever road that is to FR 249. Eventually I found my way over to Cold Knob. New windmills farther to the east from last year didn't help my navigation. I think there are new roads there as well.

Final item of business for Saturday: Make sure I can find the connector to the roads to Rupert. I did it. Back down to Richwood, where I saw a 50 pound black bear. I also found a cool run that goes from the Greenbrier side back into the South Fork. Then back to Summersville for dinner. 207 miles. Woot!

Sunday I was on it early. Destination: Clay County and the exciting riding north of CR 30. Last year, I found CR 30 and only found the portal to "north of" at 3 p.m. on Sunday. D'oh! The first few creek crossings on Jim Young Fork were deep. I got both Peach Orchard and Lobelia in one weekend. Anyway, I made the essential right which is a long steep climb.

We're gonna turn Clay County into one giant mu mu mu mud pit.

All of this eventually dumps you out on Peach Orchard in the Ugly Creek area. On of the local residents told me how to get back to Jim Young Fork. I got lost again but found a bunch of loops. This area reminds me of Caney Fork/Moses Creek.

This pond also forms a humungous mud hole. I thought I would have to turn around, but a little scouting revealed a ride around. Someone did a lot of work filling in that hole.

Back to Jim Young Fork

The ultimate downstream crossing of Jim Young Fork was deep and intimidating last year when the water was low. It didn't look so bad this time, but there were a few tense moments.

Left on CR 28 up Pisgah Ridge. Another left and then run Fola Road out to WV 16. I did the side road down into Vaughan and Dixie.

Swiss. The releases are beefy this year.

I was keeping my eye on the weather all week until Thursday. Big cold front coming through, mostly sunny high of 61. Friday, the cold front came through here and pushed out the clouds and humidity.

Looks good, right?

At the pass at Grandfather, it was snowing and again at the pass on 421.

It was raining here, but the guys at Adventure Damascus told me that the day was supposed to improve.

How can it not?

Accumulation of frozen precipitation on Feathercamp Ridge!

It almost got this sunny.

The high parts of FR 84 had honest to goodness snow, and I was being pelted with sleet. Still having fun, though.

I made it to Speedwell. Several times I almost bagged it for being cold.

On the way out, I managed a ride around. That was not happening on the way back.

Funny, I don't feel cold any more.

Back across Hurricane to Skull's Gap and back across the IMT into town. 123 miles. My ass was kicked.

Thanks for looking!

I've basically missed a whole year of 'thumper riding'

I hope that I don't have to wait that long!

I do still have both old school thumpers ..last off road ride was 5 months ago when Saluda and I trailered the XR250s down to Enoree.

...that seems like even longer ago and I need to get a more reliable means of hauling a small bike anyway as I don't like to drive my old pickup very far or very fast anymore.

I was nearly sorry for my overestimation of the amount of life my front tire had. Obi Won appeared to me and told me to go to the Degobah system. There, I will seek Yoda. Lucky met me at 181 at 730 and we were off. We froze our tailfeathers off on the way up to NC 105 pass over Grandfather.

Let's see, do I have any more clothes in here?

We did Old 421 and new 421 over through Shady Valley. Lucky split off at the North Fork of the Holston. Maybe he'll chime in with what happens out that way.

I rode 5 3/4 hours to get to here. This is the south end of a 48 mile run on the crest of Pine Mountain. It starts off as a nasty, broken up blacktop road. At a certain point, it turns to washed out gravel.

At KY 160, it turns to pavement and is a fun roller coaster ride through a mature hardwood forest.

It dumps you out on US 119.

I dropped off the Cumberland side, and continued northeast along the bottom of the mountain. I had to cross the divide between the Cumberland and the South Fork of the Pound. Before I crossed 23, I made a wrong turn which afforded me this view of Pine Mountain.

To the north

To the south

I continued following the Pound toward Flanagan reservoir. All of the roads are pavement bliss. I met up with Layla in Elkhorn City. We went out to dinner and racked out.

I didn't get such an early start. We had breakfast at the Rusty Fork.

The road off to the left is now my favorite road anywhere.

The ridge that forms the WV/VA line is like an airplane ride.

My fifth state in two days.

Down through Bandy and Baptist Valley, Rourke's Valley, and on into Frog Level.

16 into Troutdale, up Fox Creek and over to Konnarock. Grayson Highlands was about peak for the foliage. Very pretty.

Going up 421 out of Mountain City.

My tire made it. At the end, I was stopping every 10 miles or so to inspect it. New tires coming this week.

I was mightily impressed to see Gaston in cotton pants since it was only 42 when I left the crib...

By this point it was in the 30's... I opted for the full space suit, but was wishing I'd put the quilted pant liners in at this point! Don't let that sun fool ya... it was c-c-c-cold!

After some coffee and an as-always awesome shred through the sssssnake, we successfully avoided attracting TN's finest and had a nice ride up 421 through the color... it did warm up, but not enough to make us bust out the t-shirts!
