Just curious... the laws there forbid riding motorcycles?
too much traffic?
Or some other reason...
Thanks

I'd also add that China probably wants the people to skip the motorcycle in the progression bicycle>motorcycle>car so that they can sell more domestic models.

Can anyone explain me what are the policies for bikes in China?

I thought that, given the amount of Motorcycle factories in China, it would be the most popular mean of transport. But having them banned from Interstates/Highways/Freeways and cities suggests that I was wrong in my assumption.

Where can you ride them, where are they forbidden?

Two KLRs, from Cape Town to Shanghai

Fantastic achievement. My girlfriend planning a trip ... But starting in cape town, through to uk and then east to Shanghai. Although I have ridden across Africa on a KTM 990 A twice we are probably going to use two Kawasaki KLRs or if Jincheng sponsor us ... jinchengs.
Usual bike set up decisions to be made, kits, comms, questions on carnes and visas or whether to wing it...
North Africa looking a bit dodgy but there's always something isn't there.
Really like to hear experiences from people who have :

- bike setup and beefing up and strengthening the KLR
- good routes
- kit
- admin stuff

SA plates or China plates?

I'm not going to say it's impossible, but I've never seen a dual plated bike. Some cars have both HK and Chinese plates.

If you have a HK license, there is an arrangement for getting a Chinese license. When I lived in Beijing this wasn't possible so we just rode without and plead ignorance if stopped. They finally cracked down closer to the Olympics.

Every city and province is different. In Beijing (up until at least 2007), you couldn't ride anything bigger than a 200cc bike inside the 4th ring. You were able to get CJ 750's with a 京A plate which allowed you inside, but I think they've done away with most of those.

Guangzhou did away with motorcycle's entirely. Not sure about Shanghai. I think it's easier in the outer provinces.

As for why they would ban them but still make so many, I think they'd rather support the local auto industry. Get those people straight onto cars.
