I have to admire your dedication to a bike that the vast majority of the rest of us would have gladly-- GLEEFULLY-- walked away from.

What's that got to do with it? The problem is not frame numbers, it is that the registration you hand to the officer says the bike is a Honda, Suzuki, whatever and the bike is obviously not. Immediate huge ticket, immediate bike impound.

Legally speaking, if the numbers on the frame and engine match the paperwork, that's what it is in the eyes of the law.

Jay Leno has a race car that is titled as a 67 Volkswagen, and I'm sure that riveted somewhere in that aluminum tub there is a piece of VW firewall with a VIN number stamped on it.

If some dipshit with a badge and an attitude wants to mess with you, you should be more worried about that nightstick or gun in his hand than the bike getting impounded.

This discussion came up because someone suggested "slapping a plate on.... from another currently registered motorcycle" rather than trying to register the bike for what it is. I don't see how this would result in VIN numbers matching the registration.

Well, uhh... Friggin like... nothing. I am out of money and chin deep in other projects at the moment. I think about it every day, I want to RIDE IT! But at the moment nothing is happening due to my extreme financular broketude. Stupid money. I am hoping to get back to it in the next few weeks...

This is definitely my favourite project bike on ADV at the moment! It's always fun to watch people restore bikes where simply replacing the part with a new one isn't an option.

Nice job with the head stock! I always look at project like fitting the new races as practice for the next hurdle in life. On the soda blaster, yea we tried one last year worked great, but the grass still has a large dead spot were the tarp didn't cover. keep it up. I think the insurance co. would love to prove the # don't match a plate so they don't have to pay if you crash.

"...as the original build quality of these bikes falls somewhere between "Barbaric" and "Completely unsafe to ride","

That pretty much sums it all up.

I discovered these in mid-2009. Wanted one immediately just for the novelty (part of my last name IS Minsk.. and who else has their name stamped into a crankcase????). It was difficult to find any information about them but I did find a price somewhere online -- I could get a M4 - 200 (http://www.minsk-moto.com/m4_200) for less than $1k.

After a few more days scouring the net, I finally found someone in New Jersey (if I remember correctly) who used to be or was still an importer bringing the bikes from Belarus to Columbia. He told me he had a few bikes in Minsk, but they weren't USA street legal and not worth importing. So, I forgot about the novelty, till I found the old brochure I printed out in 2009 at the bottom of my side cases when I cleaned them out the other day. And a few days later I'm reading this thread. Hmmm. I'm thinking again!!!!

They fit, and they don't rattle around or anything!

Did you consider simply (always a relative term) lopping the fork head stock tube off of an existing donor bike and welding it in place of the original Minsk tube section? Would mostly have been a straightforward swap and a quick tig job. Seems like a lot of work might have been avoided, and the end result might have been an improvement.

Not to be a spoilsport.... fantastic work there and it looks like it was fun (i love tig welding). Love the thread and appreciate the sentiment involved.
