Europe doesn't require a carnet anywhere.
When you ship your bike you will present the title to customs for export.

Bring the title and your registration with you to Europe.

You need liability insurance; it's mandatory. Getting caught without it would be a big (criminal) problem. It's called "green card insurance."

There is a thread on Horizons Unlimited "HUBB" that keeps up with the cheapest insurers; prices have gone up lately.

Wallenius Wilhelmsen, in my humble opinion, are the best. About $800 each way plus some port fees of about $150. They're not going to be too patient with an individual so you're better off using a freight forwarder to handle the customs clearance. I used AllRound Forwarding here in NYC and was very satisfied. www.allroundusa.com

Absolutely must have original insurance paperwork in hand when you go to pick up your bike in Europe. Customs won't let the bike leave the port without it.

Yep and any country within the European union wil confiscate your bike and get you a big fine (which as foreigner has to be paid right at the spot) if you don't have proper insurance.

Shipping and insurance

I used this company to ship from toronto (rode up from Ga.) to lisbon, the bike is in storage there, and for insurance. Couldn't have been easier.

Typically, Customs won't release the bike to you without proof of insurance. You can either buy it in advance or get it locally after you arrive - but no insurance - no bike.

I'd pay a few extra bucks and get it in advance. Mototouring in Italy and Stefan Knopf in Germany can both provide this service.

yes. mototouring did also increase their prices a bit. but they are trustworthy
and send the neccessary paperwork (contract) whereever you ask them to
ship it to. so you will have them in your hands when arriving at customs.
