I agree with waiting until after the 4th of July. That seems to be when the spigot is finally turned off for the summer.

Wish I could hit WestFest with you too, but will be paddling down the Little Spokane River that Saturday with a pack of wild and crazy Unitarians.

I can't make the dates thrown out there, but I am planning on doing the ride 8/11-8/16 if anyone else is interested in those dates. I will be camping most of the time and usually destination minded so should be able to do it in 5 or 4 days.

Suitable Bikes and Challenging Sections

The WABDR route is suitable for all dual-sport and adventure bikes from 250cc to 1200cc. We had a R1200GSA in the inaugural ride and it did fine (but it was dumped a few times). The other section that might be tough is Road 324/325 on Bethel Ridge that has VERY deep ruts in some sections. All three of these tough sections have easy bypass roads. Get the Butler Map to see where I'm talking about.

Be sure to watch the documentary film including all the segment videos (I'll post those in a bit) before going on this trip.

New to this thread, but this sounds like something I would be totally interested in assuming you don't mind an Oregonian tag along. I'm up for just about any date. Would it be safe to assume a total of 7 days, or should one plan for more?

Ride duration for WABDR

We did it in 7 days and we were filming the documentary (only 6 riding days but we had an additional day in there for an emergency - you'll need to see the "extra footage" on the DVD to see what I'm talking about). So it really is just a 3-6 day trip. It depends on why you are doing the trip and how you want to ride it. At times I love pushing my limits and riding like a maniac to get my adrenalin rush and at other times I'm riding slow looking for side trips to explore. This route can be done either way - fast for fun or slow for exploration and discovery. There are many vistas but two you must see are the summits of Chumstick Mtn and Cooper Mtn. There are many side trips too - you'll need to consult maps and probably pick them ahead of time otherwise you'll miss them. You can camp or stay in motels but either way it's nice to settle in early and enjoy the evenings.

Howdy SeattleTrails,

I don't know you, to my knowledge I have never met you or rode with you, I don't know if you have any Ural riding experience or have ridden with Ural's in the dual sport environment, that being the case what follows is NOT to be taken personal, its a request for information.

You stated in an earlier post that you wouldn't take a Ural on this ride, I watched all of the videos you posted and unless the grades are much steeper then they appear in the video and I know that this can happen, or you didn't include film of the nasty sections of the route I didn't see anything that a Ural shouldn't be able to do. I have ridden my Ural in the Dirty Face Dual Sport Rally a couple of times, I have ridden it in the Black Dog Dual Sport Rally for the last five years, have ridden it OVER Mengel Pass in Death Valley, have ridden it in Moab and many other places most folks consider impossible for the Ural.

That being the case I am asking this question in all seriousness, do you honestly think that it is un-wise to take a Ural on this dual sport ride? I do NOT want to go on this ride if it is honestly unsafe or if doing so would pose a burden for others that we may ride with; on the other hand it looks like it would be a lot of fun.

My plan if I and other Ural riders do this is to HAVE FUN and NOT be in a race, I would rather take six days to do this and enjoy the ride, the views, the camp fire and the camaraderie of others rather then dash from one end to the other and miss the beauty of the area and photo opportunities the ride will present.

Damn these winter months! Its like waiting for christmas when its July. Watching those makes me want to pack up and head out first thing in the morning. The areas around Conconully remind me of when I was a kid dual sporting on my family vacations (before I knew that it was even called dual sport) and I cant wait to be able to ride Ruby Ridge and Skull and Crossbones again.

I would be very interested if someone made a route that used this as a base and interconnected as many sections of singletrack as possible. Either way for someone like me who is never going to be able to take the time to do a trans continent trip, this would be the ultimate adventure ride in our own back yard.
