Thanks Kevin- Sometimes it works out . I like them for whatever reason, perhaps because it shows where you are going and have been.
I guess it also says I "rode there"

Your recent shots tell me you are well, and that makes me smile- Love the ghost town

Off work and no rain or snow, AND a balmy 45 degrees or so-

Went north and west, around the north end of the great salt lake, following the old railroad route (no ice yet down low)-- (nod to purplesage and several others)

These two were just past the golden spike road- the paint is beautiful , wished I'd have brought a couple apples. Both came running over as I stopped.

Lots of big gravel, but long straights so the gravel swim wasn't too perilous

An area called the Salt Wells- protected area for 10 miles or so- much more clay/salt- and minimal gravel or dust

Leaving the road is not only frowned upon, it is a really BAD IDEA it the clay/sand is wet- once you break through the crust, the mud will swallow you

around the rocky point- An elephant?

Some more later

Happy Thanksgiving, Signal.

Way to capitalize on the blue sky weather . . . that Salt Wells area looks interesting.

To continue-
After 27 miles or so of gravel stuff, turned south a couple miles to Locomotive Springs- was a fresh water stop for the trains/men/horses.

A mile or so this way-

Older out building and a boxcar

12 miles to the old (mostly) abandoned town of Kelton-

The road follows the old RR grade, but bypasses the old wooden raised sections over the washes (this section actually looks pretty good )

Some higher speed stuff , some ruts but almost no gravel. Recent rains had made it kinda grippy

Sign explaining "this is a really old survey marker"

The marker

The old cemetery from Kelton- age and vandals have taken their toll. Some plastic flowers have been added by someone thoughtful

Very quiet out here- cool gusty breeze was the only sound

Not sure why, but the cemetery was kinda sobering. Even turned off the iPod afterward for a few miles, letting it soak in. The infant's grave hit kinda hard .

The return trip was very similar, other than heading mostly east -
Got really chilly once I hit the slab the last 55 miles home (thankfully, did it in a "quick spirited fashion" ).

Perhaps today was a very good thanksgiving ride-
A) I did the 180 or so miles in a few hours, not the days it took guys on horses/wagons. I do know I am tough enough to have done it, but very glad not to have to.

B) The road/rail was already surveyed and built- that RR was a tremendous undertaking of which that I am glad I was not involved.

C) I had copious amounts of hot water at my fingertips (and quickly everwhere else) upon reaching a home much of the world would deem spacious and lavish (though not always clean).

D) Was grateful for the opportunity and ability to ride- many do not get the chance for various reasons.

Happy Thanaksgiving All

Looks like a pretty sad story from the death dates... life was often tough and brief back then.

Glad you found this, didn't go quite as far as your trip out there
It really wasn't too cold until I hit the slab enroute home-
Would really like to do it again as perhaps a loose group, maybe round to Wendover. Its been awhile.

Pretty harsh environment out there. Again, sobering was the impression with which I was imprinted. Many unmarked graves- would truly like to know some of the stories.

Mike- very glad you're still here. Only thing I don't like here is some long winters. February is a heavy month
