Man Time...

My wife had to shoot through to Aussie for a family wedding - I had to stay home to finish a boat for a guy so my son went with her.

A friend who has an oyster farm stopped in today and gave me 3 dozen oysters.
Went to the butcher and had him cut a thick steak for me.
The result is a Carpetbagger Steak, with beer.

Man, 4 days of Man Time ahead...

Had a bit of a computer glitch..
This is a small ride we did a few days before my wife headed overseas, seems our rides all involve food!

The Quest for Fish & Chips

Like all good Quests this began with a rumor.
A rumor that up North there was a fish shop that served some of the best sea food around. We knew this would be more than a day long quest so we packed a few things in the saddle bags then headed out into what only the bravest or the most fool hardy would venture into…..

Actually, the first part is not quite true, the weather was fine and sunny, the sort any fool could ride in.

Instead of using the main roads we decided to follow coastal roads which added a lot of time onto the trip, but was a lot more fun. Many small settlements, deserted beaches and twisty roads made the ride very enjoyable.

It took around 7 hours to reach our destination, a small village on a sheltered harbour. We booked into an old hotel, our room had a balcony overlooking the harbour.
Our Hotel:

We got to our second story room by going up a steep hill to the back:

View from our balcony:

The Fish Shop was only a short walk away. It is situated near the commercial wharf, which is a good sign that the sea food will be fresh.

Even the pirates have found this place!

Dinner was excellent! We had fresh oysters and fish & chips. You pay for your fish by weight and pick out the pieces you want cooked. Nothing fancy about the place except great food and cold beer.

Our return journey was inland, going through farm land and some deep bush gorges. Not much traffic in the gorges except logging trucks. Our normal roads are pretty twisty but these were REALLY twisty.
You could only pass on the uphill parts because the corners came to quick and to sharp.. I tried once to pass downhill, but unless you can ride like those track riders with your elbow touching the ground it isn’t a good idea. Got parts of me twitching that shouldn’t have been.
All in all, a good few days away.

Hi JMJ
It is the Mangonui Fish Shop in the Far North. Lovely little spot.
I think they won the "Best Fish & Chips NZ Award" a few years ago.
Certainly deserve it, top notch food.

Good reminder to head north for the rest of us Kaipara, I had forgotten how nice that part of Northland is.
