Hi there! Being an expat in Belgium, (and not even having my bike with me), it's impossible to update this topic with more of my stuff... But here's a good one from Touratech through the paths less travelled.

can't properly embed it for some reason...

My wife is Portuguese and has a lot of family still there. I have been twice and am going back in September. We plan to retire half time in Lisbon.

Here are a few of my photos of the beautiful country!

Maybe we can have an ADV meet in September!

By October I will be posting more. It really is a special place. Not very large, but so much to see!

Anybody in the Lisbon area that can please offer me a bit of advice on routes.

As part of my tour I have a day travelling between Grandola and Tomar.

Currently I have selected a couple of options

1) Grandola - Torrao - Montemor O Novo - Montargil

2) Grandola - Lisbon - Cascias - Sintra - Mafra National Palace - Serra De Montejunto

What would any of you locals recommend? Do you feel there is somewhere that I have missed or an alternative option?

Thanks

James

James, are you going to be stopping, or just enjoying the view as you ride?

Hi,

I advise you to passing by Lisbon and Sintra. There is a common round route between them: IC19, N375, N247 and N6. Also taste "queijadinhas de Sintra" on "Casa do Preto" shop (N38 47.544 W9 22.428). Don't forget to take a picture at the most western point in Europe ("Cabo da Roca": N38 46.826 W9 29.941).

Between Lisbon and Montejunto, take the road N115 (Loures -> Cadaval).

This is my recommended route: http://goo.gl/OKFris

Enjoy:

  • Troia and Sado river estuary (ferryboat = €8!);
  • Setúbal and its famous "choco frito";
  • "Serra da Arrábida" and its awesome roads and landscape;
  • "Ponte 25 de Abril" the suspension bridge, likewise Golden Gate at San Francisco (toll = €1.65!)
  • "Serra de Sintra" landscape and the fabulous "queijadinhas de sintra";
  • Cascais and "Estrada Marginal" = N6;
  • N115, one of the most winding roads near Lisbon;
  • "Serra de Montejunto" (no words for it!);
  • Santarém and Tejo river sightseeing on "Jardim das Portas do Sol";
  • Almeirim and the famous "Sopa da Pedra" (yes, the stone soup ;-).

This is a tough route, so I advise you to take it on two days.

If you came by a weekend we could ride together!

Nice route redalert . Couldn´t find better waypoints for a nice couple of days with great roads, views and food.
Take his word yorkieterrier, the above have some of the better roads and views around and are very popular among
bikers. You´ll be pleased.

If you do come by my side (Setubal, Arrabida) please let me know and we can have a cold one on me.

Thanks! There are many waypoints missing, since the trip time available isn't that much. One of them are the "Cristo Rei" statue, "Praia das Maçãs" (Apples Beach ), Ericeira, "Linhas de Torres" (old military defense system against the french invasions) and the "pasteis de feijão" around Torres Vedras city, any many others along the coast.

I can't open that link with success
.

You could do my route, but it is quite tough for a single day. Although, it's possible to do it completely starting about 7 A.M. and finishing at 9 P.M..

To accomplish it on a small amount of time, you could bypass the round route between Lisbon and Sintra and get straight forward to Montejunto through 25 de Abril Bridge, IC17, A8 (until Loures city it is toll free) and N115.

There are quite cheap gas stations to refill gas around Loures and Almeirim. I could give you some of them for your information.
