GPS and Maps from Alice, CO to Tolland

I got my fresh, new 60cX and the maps needed to go from Alice (Fall River Rd ) the back way to Tolland on Rollins Pass Rd. Took off yesterday, and quickly met a locked Forest Service Gate on Hamlin Gulch Rd about 3 miles from the paved Fall River Rd. How often does this happen? Disappointing. Any way to know about these gates in advance?

Took a side trail (Woodpecker, I think) and ended up dumping my TE610 twice on some talus slopes and big rocky sections. Had to turn back as it was starting to snow and get dim. Next time, taking a buddy.
