I've never seen these two bikes side by side before. The Yamaha appears to have so much more mass. The KTM really looks much smaller, lighter and shorter. The only thing that sticks out to me as obtrusive on the KTM is the side tank... but in reality, they are plastic and low... which are both wise design elements reducing weight and increasing range.

It makes me appreciate the KTM as a minimalist's adventure bike that much more

Twice I test rode the Super Tenere, and twice it was after riding my 990 and switching bikes with a friend's ST at a red light.
Both times the first thing came to my mind was the ST is a nice, big, comfortable and full of torque bike while the 990 is an small, narrow, 2 stroke enduro. They are that different...

To me they appear to be rotated 90 degrees from normal, not upside down. But they are definitly not mounted correctly. Take a look at the end cap and compare that to other 990's.

950 & 990 07-08 cans don't have upper or lower side, the end cap is cut straight so I think they are right (unless he "upgraded" to newer stock cans )
I think it's just a lens effect.
