I just came into one of those winches, but I also have--and will continue to carry- my recovery kit.
160 feet of 4mm Dyneema/polyester rope, on sale at $.24/foot (sorry-sold out....I bought it all The spot thread about the guy in Washington convinced me. It's light, fits easily in a crampon bag, and goes with the bike. Steve

That is all I need to finish out my kit. Figured that out on a rocky step in Nevada that was pitched towards a 10 foot drop to a creek bed. 600 pounds of bike on its side and no traction except a slow slide towards the edge. Thank goodness that the only people we saw that whole day were just a half a mile down the road and they were two big burley men.
Anyone got a good source for dyneema rope?

Nice find on AmSteel rope by the foot!
I was accustomed to buying it in defined lengths at www.blitzkrueg.com, but their website seems to be down at the moment... ktm950se |

I BET you were! Don't know about you, but I'd be kicking myself up and down that wet, muddy trail for leaving it sitting on a nice, dry shelf in my garage.

Thing is, it's a heavy SOB to carry on the bike all the time. I packed it on the sled all winter and it got the crap beat out of it by the accessories bag. First (and only) time I had to use it, the power cable wouldn't stay connected and the freespool lever broke off. Needless to say, I was not too impressed and it has been sitting in a corner ever since.

Only thing with amsteel is the folks I know who "know" say it's very knot unfriendly and quite slippery for prusiks, too.
I like Westmarine for ropes, they sometimes have some great deals. This is a SCREAMING deal on 5mm or 6mm knot-friendlier polyester over dyneema: http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs...3130&langId=-1 Features:

Do you have a pic of your recovery kit? In use? Back in December I ended up on a steep, loose and rocky hill at night fall in the mountain jungle of Cambodia. Parked the bike for the night and set up camp on the top. Went back the next morning to ride it out and the damn battery was dead. Luckily I had a long length of rope with me and my partner was able to pull me up with his XR 650 as I was pushing the bike. A few times I dropped the 950 in the rocks and he was still just a getting it. Needles to say once on top there was no way of bump starting the beast and my partner first had to ride to the next flowing river to get me some water the could be filtered about 4k then out of the mountain to a town where he was able to round me up a battery another 130k round trip.![]() Well while he was gone I figured I would push my bike over into the shade and set up camp off the trail. Turning the bike around I found a drop off hidden under the tall grass and lost the front end into it. I was able to hook 2 ratchet straps together and some rope tied to the nearest tree and slowly ratchet it out of the hole by myself. All the while balancing it from falling over. ![]() Well after I finally got it out of the hole I did the only thing I could do to a 950 with a dead battery...Used it to support the other end of my hammock since there was only 1 tree around! |

I would like to see your kit too. Just placed my order for that rope. Thanks for the info!

Another winch alternative
At 4 lbs. this come along will easily fit in a bag or case. You can order with additional chain. Add some heavy duty tie downs and your golden.
http://www.aceindustries.com/p-68-14...ome-along.aspx Load is 1 plus 1/4 rating so 750lbs should do it for an Adventure. Just my 2 cents worth.

For winching you can buy these handy special type ratchet straps called "strapulli". ATV and snowmobile riders use these.
