Looking for someone with a DR650 to test a CDI Box in Tulsa area

Well, my little DR has no spark. I thought it was a bad CDI, so I bought one on ebay. I plugged it in and still nothin'
It may be a pickup coil or something else.

At this point I have no way to see if that box is good or bad, so I was wondering if any of you DR owners would let me put my CDI on your bike and see if it works?

I'll bring you a beer of your choice

As of now, I'm $180 out and still don't have a running bike

Cheers,

does the service manual give a range of values to look for in the pick up coil?

normally, you check the resistance across the pickup coil, most of the ones ive seen are from 400-900 ohms.

the main thing to look for is it should not be open, and should have SOME resistance.

another way to check, put the meter on ac voltage, spin the bike over, the coil should 'pulse' the meter with voltage.

if those things check out, you can pretty rule out the pickup coil being bad.

Yeah we tested it and both coils tested OK. The old cdi tested bad, but many people say that it's not very accurate.
The new (to me) cdi is supposed to be 100% OK, but you never know. I hope Garry can help me there.

Garry rocks!
Thanks for letting me try both CDIs on your DR.

Well, it turns out both CDI boxes are fine (now I have a spare), so the culprit is somewhere else.
I wish I knew what I was doing in the first place...

Tom

Make sure you have 12 volts on the o/w (orange and white) wire going to the cdi.

Call me if I can help.

Garry

It was a 100ohm resistor between orange/yellow and black/white!

I'm gonna ride this weekend!!!

dr 650 resistor?

Where was that resistor located on your DR? I have no spark and have replaced the following:
CDI
Stator
Pick up
coil
Turns over great...but no happy sparky!
MAX, Ventura CA
