Ricky - Now thats a fascinating hang. What an opportunity to have orangutans circling your hammock. A very special sight I'm sure and yet at the same time bloody scary as those things are 8 times stronger than the average male. What was their response upon discovering you inside the hammock?

Regarding boot storage here's what I've been doing.

Tye a piece of string with loops in each end then fasten the boot buckles around the loops.

Then simply hang the string around the suspension line.

My main reason for this was to simply keep them out of the rain as once the tarp is slung all my gear is stored over the suspension and under the tarp.

Realistically though not totally out of reach of the ants as they can descend the suspension if they are determined.

Permethin would be nice but I've yet to track it down in Thailand. Ricky if you can source it in KL would it be possible to get some mailed over to me? I'll keep looking for it over here and if i come across it I'll mail some to you.

All the best,

Justin

do you carry a tent?

here is a question...
who carry's a conventional tent as well as their hammock on bike trips.
im prepping for a summer on the klr, ill probably camp at least 60 days or so... up and down the trans east trail and hopefully well north into Canada.

this will be my first outing with the hammock as my principal shelter but i am torn as to weather i should bring along a compact 2 man tent as well for the times i cant find a spot with good trees.

do any of you carry tents? how often do you find you need them?
i know i can rig my hammock as a bivy but it seems a bit of a pain and less comfortable than a tent in that setup.

I often take one, just in case. My Hennessy is only about the size of a football when packed, so it is not a big deal.

There's a dearth of trees at the Marlinton Motor Inn, tbe site of BYOB '12, so I improvised.

I hung there Thursday night and Friday night. I left a day early 'cause I had an event to attend at home tonight.

I left for BYOB Wednesday evening and hung in the woodline at a Virginia rest area Wednesday night, but I neglected to get a pic.

Since you've got the hammock tarp, you can improvise and decent shelter using the hammock body as a bivy sack. I just picked up an Old Man Winter Tarp....

...which when hung low enough gives the same coverage as a tent.

My question would not be who carries a tent, but instead for those who use an underquilt, who carries a thermarest as a back up in case you have to go to ground.

In addition to my old VV hammock/tarp, I will bring my Exped pad and a folding cot that I just bought. I have used either a Thermarest or the Exped for years as a sort of underquilt (I just lay it in the hammock and put my bag on top) when it's cold. That and a decent bag are good to 40F. My back is so screwed up now that I can't deal with the ground at all, ergo the cot, which folds up smaller than my Black Diamond tent and keeps me off the ground. All I need at this point is a better (bigger) tarp - like the Old Man Winter.

Good question. I carry a Big Agnes Insulated Aircore as a backup for ground pounding and also for extra insulation in extreme conditions. Haven't used it for either yet, but sooner or later..... They are very comfortable for me as well so I am good to go either way.

+1 on using the tarp for a tent.

I'm on the road in Ireland right now and had to go to ground the other night.
Tarp is a wilderness logistics tadpole, hammock is WBB, mat is exped downmat(use instead of underquilt)

I found it. Place is north of Augusta.

I95 runs through the middle of Lake Marion.

It' s the J. Strom Thurmond Reservoir. It used to be called Clarks Hill Lake. That's Georgia in the distance.

I hung last night at Deal's Gap.

It was a beautiful, clear night, so I left the tarp in its snakeskins.

I grabbed the Warbonnet Traveler by mistake when I was packing. Meant to get the Blackbird with its bug net. The skeeters didn't bother me through the night, but they were around when I was setting up and striking camp.
