Weekend Baja ride! August 23-24, 2014

Nothing too major, just a nice little off-road ride down the Baja coast.

I hosted a group of riders from New Mexico and Arizona for a weekend Baja ride. These are KLR guys I've ridden with in Arizona (and my little brother tagged along on his Gen 1 KLR). The 6 of us (5 of whom were on KLRs), planned to ride from San Diego, through Tecate, to Camalu and returned via Tijuana.

Well, that was the plan…

Hooo, boy, the weekend ride down the coast – mainly from Santo Tomas to Camalu – was one for the books. Why didn't I know that the coast road was washed out in several places? I gotta do better research...

All went really well, but there were some areas that were not big bike friendly. A couple of drops but no injuries.

We hit the coast just north of the Punto San Jose lighthouse...

...and spent time at Coyote Cal's.

We camped on the beach at the volcano south of Erendira.

The next morning (Sunday), we headed south with breakfast plans in Camalu. After two pretty serious wash-outs and detours that were not feasible, we ate locally, hit the pavement, then on to Hwy 1 North.

I had a hook-up at the San Ysidro border and the crossing took 8 minutes total.

The Baja first-timers enjoyed it--we all did, really.

Absolutely. Most of my Baja rides are 2-3 day affairs.

There is so much to see, so many places to ride...I'll never get tired of it.

Awesome ride, Dan

I'd love to do it again some time, (maybe after the coastal roads are fixed) and this time I'll bring a sticker for Coyote Cal's!

I've thought about it long and hard, and the best part IMO was scrambling toward the Mex/US border like a bunch of bandits.

Right on.

Those trails would be a lot of fun and not so challenging on smaller bikes not loaded with camping gear, firewood and liquor. Washed out roads and Baja really are a nice match.

Please add any photos you might have.

Note: Here are some ofnthe participants: Sr., Jr., Cap'n Inappropriate, Jake, Poncho, Mr. Steak, The Gimp.

You know who you are.
