"I gotta get away!" "Me too!"

Well, that is how it started... JeffRides was telling me how he hasn't had time to ride much in about 2 years. He pretty much said "I need a break before I kill someone!!" So over a few weeks, it kept coming up. "I gotta get away!"
JeffRides and I are both pretty much self employed. I have only been in that category since Jan 1, 2014. Jeff, for much longer. But lately, neither have had much time to ride, even short local stuff. I thought I would have more time to ride not being in the 8-5 rat race, but starting a new business takes a lot of time!!!!
Jeff mentioned that he had one free weekend for the foreseeable future and I happened to have a service call come up in TN... One thing led to another and he and I loaded up his trusty KLR and my Tiger800XC and we headed for the hills on Thursday morning. We left Jackson, MS around 9:30 Thursday morning and arrived at The Kickstand Lodge in Stecoah Valley, NC Thursday evening, after battling traffic and heavy rain through Birmingham, AL...

Soon I could see mountains from the truck:

We get to the Kickstand Lodge where Jeff was a regular in years prior, greet the crowd assembled on the deck, grab some supper and decided to wait to morning to setup Camp Snoreaway, so we utilized an empty bunkhouse for the night.

Friday morning we setup camp... For me that was a ENO;

Which is where I am hanging out while starting this ride report....

By the time we arrived in Stecoah Valley, my one service call in TN had turned into 2 more in Birmingham and 1 in Tuscaloosa. Gotta work to play!!

Jeff knows these roads from the years he has been coming up here to ride. I've only ridden in this area 2 or 3 times on a bike. One of those was passing through on my way to the RDV rally in Laurel Springs a few years back and the other was in October of last year when Jeff and I brought a new guy up here to teach him how to ride curves on his cruiser. So Jeff just pointed at all the gravel roads that we couldn't take cruiser boy on... Friday ended up looking like a rainy day, so we geared up and headed out! We decided to head towards Maggie Valley and spend some time in Wheels Through Time with dale while the rain came through. So we ran over SoCo gap to Maggie, grabbed a quick bite at Country Vittles (or some such place) and headed to WTT.

Usually, Jeff would ride the 580 miles up here from MS, but I had to bring work stuff, and neither of us wanted to do 500 miles of flat interstate in 90+ degree weather!

And to make my riding even more interesting, I broke a toe a couple of days before we left...

We make it to Wheels Through Time, first visit for me and several years since JeffRides had been there...

I instantly recognized the Veritas car from the "What's in the Barn" TV Show about Dale and WTT

Jeff said they have added on to the building and there are parts, pieces, and complete bikes in every nook and cranny.

"I gotta get away!" "Me too!"

Back a couple of years ago, I was at Barbers Vintage Festival, sitting on the hill at "Ace Corner" across from the entrance to pit row. We were watching the century race. A race for 100 year old motorcycles. I see them come by once and on the second lap, right in the down hill left hand turn, I see one of the racers fish tail with a blown rear tire.
Fast forward a few months and I am watching "What's in the Barn" and see an episode about Dale and Matt racing against Joe Gordello (sp?) and Matt blows a tire... Wait, a sec... That looks familiar. They show it in slow mo and I realize I was there... Fast forward to Friday morning, and here are the bikes Dale and Matt were on!

So we continue around WTT, and it is great having a mechanic head like Jeff to guide me around and tell me about the technology of the day...

On top of everything else Jeff and I do, we also work with a company called "Way Back In Time", which is a vintage car limo / wedding car company. (www.waybackintime.com) We offer cars for special events, weddings, movies, photo shoots, etc.

Our "collection" back home includes rides like:

1961 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud

My 1949 Chevy 3800 flatbed

A Cord 810 Westchestire

1929 Lincoln L, 1938 Packard V12 & 1941 Cadillac

Well, enough about our toys and a shameless plug and on with the trip!!

We head outside WTT and are checking the weather and hear a bike crank up and see Dale go whizzing down the driveway....

We soon pick a direction and off I go following Jeff "the human GPS"... Most of the places I have been around here were paved, so I was ready to see some of the gravel roads that I have heard about for years from other riding buddies who come up this way...

I was hoping to record tracks on my GPS and be able to use them in future route planning, but I didn't know my GPS was low on memory until we got back to camp and it had only recorded the last 30 or so miles. So I deleted a bunch of routes from out west that I had forgotten were in there.
I also like to take pictures of road signs to help me remember where we went... Makes these ride reports easier, also! :lol

Here is Jeff with his trusty KLR and my Tiger 800XC:

The rain is now upon us in spots, a drizzle here, a sprinkle there. If I close my vents, the rain stops. If I get warm and open the vents, the rain starts... Oh, well... Just ride!

We soon find our way up to "Buzzards Roost", which is a few feet above I-40:

Luckily someone installed a rope to help a couple of old fat guys climb down from the road and back up!

Me at the edge:

(These pics are all from my phone when stopped. I have to download my lanyard camera for the action shots, and I also have some video on my new GoPro I picked up for this trip. My old GoPro disappeared in Moab last summer!)
