I rode about a hundred miles in and around Michaux today. DCNR must have a big gravel budget this year. Big stretches of road have a fresh layer of pretty deep gravel. Made things interesting at times.

I notice the same thing in both Buchanan and Tuscarora as well

I got my first taste of Michaux this weekend and had a great time

We also took the ferry to Millersburg, which was really entertaining...

I am very interested to come back and do more than just ridge road. What is the deal with camping here? The site locations don't seem to be on their general use map.

Thanks!

That ferry is on my Bucket List . I could even probably put together a couple stone roads on the way. I am about 1 hour SE of there.

Call the rangers office in Michaux. Rough camping might be permitted in some areas (with permit). You also have Pine Grove Furnance State Park camping on the north end of Michaux.
On the south end you have Caledonia State Park. these will both have camping with bath houses for showers.
But I still would call to ask if you need a reservation for tent camping. I know they have RV sites which fill up real fast.

Here is more on camping in PA state parks.

But next time tell someone your coming. I am north of there by 20 miles every other weekend, and always looking to ride

I see your from NJ. What you need to do is Follow the Trans PA trail from Frenchtown. It will lead you to camping in Michaux. But it's going to take 5 days, run you through several other PA state forest and about 1000 miles getting to Michaux

Thanks for the info. I put together a route to the abandoned pa turnpike and back with as many dirt and interesting roads as I could find, while still making decent time. (I didn't have 5 days ) All in all the route was a success.

I guess you mean the abandoned tunnel. Which one was it? and do you have the Track (gpx) file you created that includes your dirt roads? If so, PM me and I will send you my email address. Always interested in collecting tracks of my end of PA (that have dirt roads).

I do have some tracks. PM me your email. Other than Michaux, the interesting dirt was on the way back after the ferry at Millersburg. I'll make a gdb file and mark the interesting roads. There are lots and lots of dirt/gravel roads near the turnpike, but we didn't get to many of them this trip.

Great job Y'all. Thank you all for the input to this thread.
I thought about changing it into a bloggy thing for me.... My wonderful wife reminded me that Y'all might not give a shit about my riding and that the Michaux thread has leggs of it's own. SO, there will be no changes to the thread.
I may post a photo or two from elsewhere in the area as I always have.

Ah... Er... like this:

Only because I have no new Michaux photos....

I am riding a little in the next few weeks, but I will be no help to the Michaux thread.

I will be in town from June 28th-July 4th, looking to ride (with my 13 YO nephew on back) I have to work Thur and Fri, but for the evenings I have some shorter routes planned through Buchanan to get him used to riding. Come Saturday I am sure I will end up heading towards Michaux. (I am on vacation the whole week of 4th of July.
In those 7 days I should be able to start my nephew on a life track of motorcycle riding
July 5th I have to take him home so he can get a cast off his wrist. I will be back that same night with my Wife, but no bike.

Anybody planing any riding that weekend? I got Saturday - Wednesday to show the nephew what's it all about

I'll be riding in Michaux, but not till the 7th. I am hoping to get a small group together to ride. Unfortunately most will be on street bikes. They seem adventurous enough that they're willing to ride the dirt roads. We shall see how it turns out. My wife and I will be the only ones on dual sports.

Just keep away from the north end of Ridge Road and Besecker Gap Road. Those are not street bike friendly. The rest of the roads should be doable.
