After several years of annoyance, I reported on NavTech's map error report site that Piney Mountain Ridge Road actually does meet US30, so we can expect that by 2015, our Garmin GPS units will probably navigate that road. Not that I need the GPS there; I can't get lost in Michaux anymore.

Piney Mountain Ridge Road is gated a good bit of the year. It is gated shut right now.

Wouldn't it be cool if gate info was uploaded to the net by the state?

Too much to ask for.

I cannot comprehend why Piney Mountain Ridge Road is gated part of the year. I can kind of understand when they open a bunch of other gated roads (most of which are dead ends) for deer season since the state is trying to reduce the deer population in the state forest, but PMRR is also open from late spring to early fall. It's like some bureaucrat just loves to keep people guessing.

I think they shut it down for snowmobiling in the winter. The gate gets shut right after deer season. Not sure about the opening date so late in May though, spring gobbler maybe.

Last year I rode it from northeast to southwest (as I usually do), and the gate was open. I only found a gate locked at US30! Who's to say whether the north gate lock was broken open, or the ranger quit that day before he would get to the second gate?

Bolt cutters are too heavy to carry, but I made it anyway.

30 April 2013 in Michaux

Yesterday was a beautiful day for a ride in Michaux.

Still snow is a few shady spots.

Kayakers thought it was a good day too.

It's a short jug handle along Middle Ridge Road. The "road" is about 30 yards long.

Very Cool!

Middle ridge is the road that runs the entire length of the ridgeline right? Is that between Shippensburg rd and Long Pine?

Ridge Road runs the full length. Middle Ridge is a short road that connects Ridge Road and the little community of Mainsville.

The Michaux State Forest map is an invaluable resource. They have paper ones at the main office on Route 30 or you can download a PDF version from the state forest website. Some of the forest roads can get... convoluted. I got lost a lot less after I got a map.

Pine Grove Furnace SP usually has them, too. Many of the SF garages even have a ride-up rack affixed to an outside wall, such as Tuscarora's on PA275.

The Bald Eagle SF office at PA235 and PA45 has maps for all the state forests if you get a chance to stop in there. I remember going into the old department headquarters at Reilly and 3d in Harrisburg and the racks and racks of maps in the lobby was a form of heaven.
