Fuel in a bag?

Here's the deal - I want to carry extra fuel on my 950 but I don't want to spend the $ on the aqualine tanks, or carry around the tour tank since that would kill my top storage box on the back of the bike.

But it's only 33oz and that would require ~8 bags for 2 gallons which would be expensive as well as a hassle.

So... what are the alternatives? I was thinking a camelback bladder 110oz or MSR Dromedary http://www.msrcorp.com/hydration/dromedary.asp - they come in 10 liters.

Will gasoline eat/destroy a camelback or dromedary bladder? Will the gas get contaminated by the polyurethane?

Yes. Yes. Polyurethane isn't compatible with Gasoline.

Polyethylene on the other hand is just fine. I mean, if your heart's set on a flexible bladder.

Also, if you check www.nalgene-outdoor.com you can get a material datasheet for the above product. The bag and cap are Polyethylene, but you should put your mind at ease about that, it's your gas.

If I remember, the Platypus bags and caps are also Polyethylene, I had a material data sheet at one time. Send them an email and ask. And ahh, don't mention the G-word.

Not true. Dynamite contains fuel and oxidizer, it will explode underwater, or in a vacuum. Gasoline in liquid form cannot burn.

Now, back to the topic. Yes I would carry gas in a plastic bag that can hold it correctly. Who makes such things is the topic.

Would I carry dynamite around on my bike in my pelican luggage? Yes, because I'm not also carrying blasting caps along with it. wtf dude. where do you come up with this nonsense.

The cheap, red plastic 2gal fuel containers that can be found at most mass merchandise stores are shouting from the high wall, "You really think you can kick our ass, do you?"

You can flavor something, repackage it to no end, call it different names, put creative steekers on its container; write glorious things about how its new, different and better, have a punk rap whatever loser band of idiots endorse it, promote it as a sexual aid, etc.......

I've seen some pics on the web of a couple of 950's in Africa with Kolpin Jr's. attached to the crash bars up front. I'd be worried about the wind drag they'd have as well as the ungangly width. I wouldn't worry about crashing so much because a 950 without crash bars/covers slides on its fuel tanks anyway. Chances are they'd get ripped from their mounts immediately anyway.

I've also seen Kolpin Jr's hung from the bottom of panniers. The older Kolpin Jr. fits neatly inside of the plastic H-B panniers. The new one should fit as well, but I cannot vouch for it.

I've just strapped "Blitz" $5 gas cans from Wal-Mart on the back seat before. If I needed mucho gaso more often than, well, never... I'd probably look for something more trick like Kolpin's. But Kolpin's are not cheap. Of course, you can't put a price on hualing enough fuel, safely.

Somewhere I've seen a Chinese army surplus fuel bladder in olive drab. I think they held about 5 gallons, but I'm not sure. I cannot find them anywhere now. That'd be great for hauling the extra fuel only when you need it.

I like Hilslamer's collapsable bag. If the gas station attendant looks-up when you are filling it, they're likely to shut your pump off. Still, I'm going add one to my kit the next time someone treats us to coffee at work.
