You're a lucky man! I just drove through through the Smokies on my way back from a funeral in Gatlinberg. The wildflowers are peaking right now. Trillium (at least two species), Mayapple, Bloodroot, Foam flower... You are in for a treat!

Trilliums are my absolute favorite flower, closely followed by Lady Slippers. Be safe Mike, have fun - you are going to one of my favorite places on the whole planet.

Learned that an old friend passed yesterday morning from heart complications. Chris (center of the pic, goofy grin with Atalnta Braves hat) and I (tallish kid on right side next to china cabinet thing) were neighbors in the Murphy Canyon Naval Housing Complex in San Diego...thick as thieves, we were. Whether it was climbing the fence and exploring the canyons..evading Marine Corps MPs all the while , or jumping off the garage roof onto piles of mattresses, or playing grass lot football in bare feet, we were inseperable. If you fought one of us, you fought both of us. Brothers. More often than not, if you couldn't find us, we up to no good So many good memories...

Good bye, my old friend. May there be endless games of barefoot, grass lot football in Heaven.

I'm back, but haven't processed anything yet. In a bit, in a bit



EDIT: OK, got a few good ones. Apparently, I can't take a decent pic of a trillium to save my scrawny arse. Thought I had several good ones, but I was wrong.

However, the trip was not a total failure...Max Patch is stupifyingly beautiful. Yes, stupifying.

I didn't realize just how much I needed this little excursion...It has been a rough year so far. Lost an old friend and having to watch another slowly fade from 4 different kinds of cancer just to start things off...

I made it to the top, and there were two other families who had camped overnight on the mountain top, and another who walked up behind me. I chatted with a fellow named Scott and his wife for a few minutes & helped them get a few nice family shots as the sun came up in front of us. I snapped a few photos myself, and then proceeded down the nearest trail to walk a couple miles. Here is what I came up with for the day, in no particular order, mind you:

It was refreshing to stand in the valley on the backside of the mountain and just listen to the relative silence of the area. The occasional bird could be heard, but the only constant sound was the wind. For a bit, I just rolled up my sweatshirt and put it on a log as a pillow and stretched out...closing my eyes. Peace can in fact be found, if you look hard enough On the way back to Asheville, along Meadow Creek Road, I had the windows down, listening to the birds and the creek which runs near the road...the smell of cut grass, people smiling and waving as you drive by...heaven, I tell ya!!

man I'm gonna miss Coastal SC. We went there every year for a hunting trip for the past 10 years, right smack in the middle between Myrtle Beach and Charleston. We will no longer be hunting there, because we leased some hunting land in Kentucky. :-(
