Hey JD got a question for you

Long time reader of your builds. It is neat to see what can be done with the Versys platform. I have a quick question for you and your experience with them.

My 09 Versys killed its stator, r/r, and battery a while back and I am putting the parts together to rebuild it. Looking at installing the Compu-fire r/r instead of the OEM stlye r/r. Any knowledge of this system or opinions on doing this mod? I have read the Versys forum stuff on the subject just looking for other opinions as well. The cost is more for the Compu-fire compared to an OEM stlye from Rick's just wondering if it is worth it.

Thanks,
Kilroy

kilroy, there has been much research done regarding the electrical problems you went through, poor ground connections have been a common occurance.
clean any paint off any electrical components at the attachment screws, use a star lock washer to add grounding effectivity. keep them clean and tight. this is common in the world of bikes.

nope, don't see the point of going after market when the OEM parts are available dirt cheap. the stator failure on the ptwin is documented, but it's such a low incident rate that it almost comes down to bad luck. remember, the Versys uses the same parts as the ER6, EX650, Ninja 650 and that's a lot of bikes out there on the road worldwide.

at least it's not a BMW 650 stator at a cost of $1100 plus related parts and special tools to R&R.

it's an easy fix. order the 2 SS dowels when you order a new gasket for the cover, 15cents each, cheap insurance. use RTV in clear, with 3M adhesive remover sprayed on paper towels to remove excess when the cover is in place. don't spray 3M directly on the part. when done, it won't look like anyone has been in there.

true, but the electrical on these bikes is reliable overall. of course, it helps if the bike is checked front to back for chafe and routing, all the connections pulled apart and greased, switches lubed, and so on. a good rainy day job, that's what i do.

Thanks

Thanks JD.

I aggree with your thoughts on this. I was just making sure there is not a better mousetrap out there now. I figured with the amount of miles you have on these bikes that you would be a good resource for some info on it. I have a Rick's stator coming for it now and I am going to have the old one rewound as a spare.

Good luck on the new bike, I look forward to see what you make out of it.

Thanks,
Kilroy

Not really, Copper Canyon would be more tempting. If you bring your next rat out here around March, you could make it even more tempting.
