Nice looking ride! I know that you said only for gravel, but what happens if one of those gravel roads has a water crossing? Turn around? That exhaust doesnt look very water friendly.

love those protaper atv bars.
had mids (i like less pullback than the his) on my klr and now my dr.
imo they are the perfect bar for comfort sitting and standing.
very stout when crashed also.

the bars are ProTaper SE ATV High, and are a perfect bend for the riding position i like for long travel days. the silver bars on the bike are a little beat, so i ordered new bars in platinum.

bike has been in the water with the low exhaust underwater without hurting anything. it's the air intake box that would concern me a lot more than the exhaust. it's not a dirt bike, and wasn't designed to be.

there's some photo's somewhere on ADV of guys riding the Versys down the center of a creek. not where the trail or track crosses the creek, but down the center. the creeks i seem to find aren't like that. mine are boulders and mud.

Just saw this and read through... seriously nice build you've got going here.

It'll be a bloody evil looking thing on the road, too - you gonna have a spare set of supermoto wheels for it?

Cheers - boingk

plenty of riders never think of using a bar with ATV in the bend designation, especially on something other than a dirt bike, but they are great. i've used the ProTaper Raptor also, but like this bar better.

can confirm the "stout when crashed" part too.

This a real nice project. For the money you are getting a lot done.
Will hope my beast ends as creative in a couple of months.

Keep it up.

thanks. i don't have a good feel for whether these types of builds can be done inexpensively over your way, but here it's fairly easy to do a budget build.

i decided to break down and buy the 40mm wider radiator that fits the versys and late model 650R, used, but still expensive. i could have fabbed a spacer for the smaller radiator, but said the heck with it.

this purchase forced an itemized accounting of where things stood budget wise, and i'm still good on the $ issues. now i'm pretty confident that it will be a $1200 project.

i came across a near new DL1000 19" wheel, so i picked it up for a spare, or maybe mount a different tire on it. these are a very versatile wheel and bearings can be found all the way down to 14mm. i'm surprised more Versys guys don't put a 19" on the front, at least for trips where they might spend some miles on gravel. this mod is easy and well documented for the Versys swap, and allows you to run a nice set of TKCs, or maybe a set of the Kenda Big Block, all in 1200GS sizes. the 19" front on the Versys makes a big difference.

I'm still looking for one.

I'll second that! +1
