Well here we go again, it's that special time of the year where I spend an obsessive amount of time glued to my blackberry or pc with a bunch of people I've never met but somehow feel I know based on our posts in this great thread

Glad to be back, glad to see the familiar folks back, glad it's Dakar season.....glad to be on Team ADVF5

Good to be back!

Adventure Spec are supporting two riders this year, Craig Bounds 86 (as usual) and Jenny Morgan 173 (Jen's first attempt!).

I'm running a seperate thread for those keen to keep up with Craigs Race HERE as I know things get a *bit* busy in here.

We have a large team on the ground over there this year and have direct access to the riders and support team (Patsy Quick), and also to Craigs support crew including Tamsin Jones (second UK lady to finish the Dakar last year) and Markus Riegler (one of the main team sponsors : Delta Kuntstoffe).

If you want photos or info about your riders and aren't having any luck through other means then drop us a PM and we'll do what we can to secure media and info from the ground for you.

T-Minus : 2 days 18 hours 45 mins...apparently....

Subscribed... very glad to be on broadband this year, instead of trying to sniff wifi with an iPhone stranded by snow in Europe.

Nice intro, Doyle!

Well there are 68 pages in the buildup thread......

News in from South African rider Albert Hinternaus 159

Hi, got the bike yesterday already. Luckily I got stuck in big city traffic in the taxifrom the airport yesterday so myteam couldn't wait and went to the docks for me to fetch all the vehicles.(while I unpacked and had a beer..)That entailed a 100km sclepp to get there sort out the customs stuff, then ride the bikes back into town. Started to put the NIX stickers on bike will send pics later. Said Hi to Alfie and Ian.
I 'm up for scrutineering at 10:45.

Thats in 20 minutes time! Sounds like Albert is approaching this Dakar in the right fashion - a beer while the support guys get the bike through customs

ARE YOU READY FOR the DAKAR 2011?

I know I am!!!!

More pics of the new KTM 450 rally bike:

Question Ready?

So I hooked up the new, faster (and undead), Desktop PC (with a brandy-new F5 key), and the ol' reliable Notebook is in hot standby.

Made a grocery run yesterday and stocked up for ~3 wks (and have plenty of rice and beans and propane to weather an emergency).
Also grabbed a couple of cartons of ciggies while out & about and filled the tank in the truck so I can power the Notebook off the inverter
if a storm blows in and knocks power out.

{THIS NEW KEYBOARD SUX!!}

Jonah tees are in hand (well, in the box from Touratech, at least).

JMo swag bag is "in the mail."

Team F5 tees ordered.

What am I forgetting?

BEER!!!

Guess I'm gonna have to make a little run and see if a couple of 30-packs will fit on/in the "new" RS and, since the forecast is for overcast and ~70degF, maybe turn a 32 mile RT into a little run down across the ol' wooden one-lane bridge across the Angelina, with a looparound in the opposite direction to pass by Church's Fired Chicken on the way back. Hmmm ... I might be able to turn that into about 200 miles.

Damn the bad luck!

I almost made it...

Twas 3.26am this morn...

I was caught red handed...

Trying to quietly pull my KTM up the stairs so I could put it in my computer room while being glued to the ADV Dakar coverage.

Wife now "knows" I am nuts

High noon in Buenos Aires:

Pal Anders Ullevalseter's team has a showdown with the police! translated from his website.

Pål Anders and the others in the Team Scandinavia got bikes for review yesterday.
This alone was a little story for themselves. Because Pål Anders has a cold, so he chose to drive a car, then they should bring out the bikes and cars.
Patric and Vlado (both mechanics), ran two of the bikes back tin Buenos Aires. On the way there, they came to run a little mistake, and came away from each other. As they stood and waited, and wondered a bit of direction, there was suddenly a police car driving in the direction of Patric. So the police stopped the car and the car was a particular officer. He went against Patric and directed a sudden a gun in his neck.
Patric put on a very well marked Dakarsykkel, and the police were therefore extremely cautious in relation to this bike was stolen.
After some back and forth, and brekftelser from Pål Anders that the bike was not stolen, it was a pretty stressful situation turned into a solemn occasion. It ended with a pat on the shoulder and then the guys got a police escort back to Buenos Aires.
Pål Anders and the other team got a good laugh, and Patric and Vlado regained the good Dakarfølelsen.

With the team this time, Paul Anders, Francisco Arredondo, Thomas Berglund and Ronnie Bodinger. The mechanics of the team is Patric, Vlado Kusnier, Lars Lindman, and Johnny Nordberg.
Patric driving the car (Sprinter) with dad to Arredondo, who also has the same name but with senior back. Johnny, Lars and Vlado driving the big truck.

Today there is a full review of the bikes, and tomorrow they will come check the rally. After the check is neither Pål Anders or any of the others, the opportunity to lay a hand on the bikes before the start on January 1!

Otherwise, the doctor ended the visit the other day that Pål Anders was put on antibiotic therapy (the cure for 5 days)

Hopefully he came to his senses and flew Madrid - Johannesburg - Johannesburg - Buenos Aires. There are daily flights from JNB to BA.

Apparently there has been a serious carcrash near techinspection, by competitor Ignacio Casale Silva. Any news on that?

There are two South African entrants in the bikes category of this years Dakar. They are Albert Hintenaus (159) and Iain Stevenson (102). Both are rookies to the Dakar, but Albert has considerable experience riding Rally raid in North Africa. Both are riding KTM 690's.

Iain's bike is safely in BA as well. It came in with the Alfie Cox Racing team who are also racing again in a Nissan pickup.

The support truck.

More on Iain's website.

Other South Africans competing are of course Alfie Cox (driving a Nissan car with navigator Jurgen Schroeder), Geniel De Villiers and American driver Mark Miller's navigator Ralph Pitchford in Team VW.
