One thing that hasn't been touched on much with regard to the Dakar races favoring the sand is how ABSOLUTELY destructive it is on a motorcycle's wear and tear as well. After spending days out riding in the sand dunes, I hated nothing worse then the time and money required in maintenance of my bikes afterwards. I'd be constantly amazed at how penetrative and abrasive sand is in every area of a bike. Sand dune riding alone separates the sponsored riders from the privateers in such huge ways, not just in technique and conditioning, but overall constant bike maintenance and repair. Without the sand sections, the bikes would fair much better with regard to engine fatigue. And this is always the most fatiguing stages for the riders as well. And the most difficult to navigate through.
Yet another aspect I have yet to encounter - and I consider myself a pretty experienced dune rat. The only wet sand I have ever encountered was on the leeward side of otherwise dry dunes, water held in the soil by these little thin grass-like plants...with dry sand blown over the top, it was completely disguised ot her than the plants - hard to spot at any speed. The front wheel would sink to the axle so quickly that an abrupt OTB was inevitable. It was comical. But no, never had sand burns before from wet packed sand...LOL.

With regards to bike maintenance - I guess I just assumed everyoneknew that it gor EVERYWHERE - not just the back of your bellybutton too?

Piglet just thought you would like to know he posted a few new photos over on Dakar Dazed: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showt...616099&page=93

These were taken by my friend Stuart who was following the Dakar this year... he got some great shots, these were just a few...

So ...

... I stopped by the Post Office just before heading out on my latest I-Need-Another-Bike trip and, just in time for a photo-op, there was a fat envelope waiting. Thanks, Hayduke, the shirts are awesome (and the DSR.com sticker was appropriately timed, too)!

(And before anyone comments, I know I need to stay away from the Blue Bell!)
