All - I can't find anywhere the max capacity for the MP3 function for the ZUMO's . . . or what is the biggest SD card it will read ? 2/4/8GB? Before I go drop the dough on a bigger card, just wanted to see if any TECHIES out there know the answer.
Thankx in advance~ |

I'm a geek, I guess ...
Hi!
I guess I'm a techie/geek enough to give somewhat of an answer. Apparently an 8GB SDHC card can be used. The official statement from Garmin was 4GBs but in practicality the 8GB can be used. The one thing that is a bit unclear is whether or not the 1000 MP3 limit has been raised. There is also the issue of everytime the Zumo is turned on it has to index all the MP3's. That process can take a bit of time. It's not instant. I just spent some time trying to find a link to where I found out about the 8GB capability but wasn't successful except of course here on advrider. There is a recent thread about this very same issue. http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=285523 I'm using a 2GB which seems to suit my purpose. But I also have a 60GB iPod to hook into the Zumo as well. Read through that advrider link. There is a lot of useful info there. Have fun with the Zumo. It's an amazing thing to use in so many ways. Hope this has helped. Enjoy, Liz |

Many threads about this on zumoforums.com. Some have used up to 16GB cards.

I'm using an 8GB card with no issues. I think the Zumo 550 can only list 1000 songs (currently), but you may be able to create playlists and use those to access the songs in a different way.

Another issue with big cards;
if you add another mapset then it can only be up to 2GB Bit of a pain with City Nav Europe which is 2.2GB . |

I bought a 32 GB SD card for my DeLorme PN-40. I couldn't get my computer to read it, then I thought, "I wonder if it's my reader"... For kicks, I put the 32 GB card into my Zumo 450, then plugged that into my Computer. Guess what? It read the 32 GB card in the Zumo just fine. So that tells me that the card reader in the Zumo can read the high density SD cards (unlike my cheap $3 SD card reader I bought with some SD cards). If the Zumo can read the high density format (and it certainly seems that it can), I see no reason why it can't handle the largest format out there (32 GB at the moment).

How do you load them?
I have been using a 4GB card that I put MP3s via the card reader on my laptop then transfer it over to the ZUMO. No matter what I do I can only get it to find at most 821 songs when there is 910 on the card.
I learned that on my Laptop, I create 8 folders and spread the music equaly among them but still cant get all the songs listed that are available. I have read that some leave the SD card in the ZUMO and then put music on it via the USB. SO my question is to you guys using 8GB cards etc, how many songs does / can your Zumo list? I dont care about playlists, I just browse and play all and let the zumo shuffle them. Also, I read that all I have to do is just drag and drop them to the SD in the ZUMO and it will create folders needed for the music and will find them all I want to put a 8GB card in my ZUMO but dont want to waste the money if it wont find all my music. Thanks What am I doing wrong?

The size of the card doesn't matter. The Zumo will only recognize 1000 MP3's. Usually songs don't show up because for some reason they were not transferred in MP3 format or they became corrupted during the transfer.
Also, split your files up into individual folders by album. The fewer the folders your music is in, the longer the Zumo will take to boot up.

iTunes and MP3
I think what has happened is some of the files were rips from CDs using iTunes and are not in MP3 format. So, I am going to get a MP3 converter and make sure all my music is MP3
