The nightmare of Persephone
Where pennyroyal and wild mint grew and the earth sprouted her first primrose now peasants bargain for cement and the birds drop dead by the chimney Sleep, Persephone* in the earth's embrace come out no more to the balcony of the world Where the mystics joined hands reverently before they enter the sacrificial site now the tourists throw away cigarette butts and go to see the new refinery. Sleep, Persephone* in the earth's embrace come out no more to the balcony of the world Where the sea became a blessing and the bleatings of the field where a bounty now trucks carry to the shipyards empty bodies, children of scrap metal and plate. Sleep, Persephone* in the earth's embrace come out no more to the balcony of the world greek song *In Greek mythology Persephone was the daughter of Demeter, goddess of plant life and agriculture. Persephone was abducted by Hades, god of the Underworld, who wanted to marry her. It was eventually arranged that Persephone would spend the autumn and winter with Hades and be allowed to return to her mother every spring and summer. This myth was used to explain why no plants grow for six months every year: Demeter mourns for her daughter. |

The road from Pemberton to Lillooet is the Duffy lake road. Maybe the best ride in B.C.
The sea to sky is the new name for the highway from Van to Whistler. They upgraded it for the olympics, but forgot that it runs to Pemberton. All the new paving stopped in Whistler. |

While I do admit to waiting for the drama, I am glad there wasn't any.
Thanks for posting.

Great photos and story. Thanks for sharing. I'm just too much of a lone wolf type traveler to travel with company.

That is one evil grin you're wearing there, John!
![]() Finally got to catch up on the thread - great ride and I too was waiting to see how you'd fallen out with THC. I totally agree with your comments about Whistler. I used to live there when I first came to this country - a long time again now, and when I moved on in 1997 Whistler Creek was an empty gravel parking lot. Now it's a city in itself. And yes, waaaay too many people. I found that the longer I lived there the less I went into the village proper. Also, I got a few of your musical references. 'Sheep Go To Heaven' would be Cake. 'No Reply At All' is Genesis, and I guess there isn't anyone alive over the age of 35 who doesn't know that "Brothers In Arms' is Dire Straits. Cool - thanks for taking the time to write this up! |

Great RR!
Hey John,
Yes your title suckered me in to reading your RR. You did good man. I have broken away from groups several times to venture out on my own... the place I love the most. But, there's always that pang of guilt that I'm having so much fun while hoping the others weren't pissed-off with my departure. If you ever make it to the states and want someone to make a half-a-trip with give me a jingle! JB2
