Proven GPS maps of Costa Rica
Looking for GPS mapping for Costa Rica. I've read all other ADV related posts (may very dated) and haven't found much that is recent. Any ideas?

those maps are compressed (.rar)
same idea as a .zip file. you need to un-rar them (uncompress) w/ this windows program http://www.stuffit.com/ http://www.win-rar.com/download.html xp is 32 bit most win 7 are 64bit vista could be either with either of those programs loaded, right click on the downloaded and select extract/uncompress here. you'll then have all the files. run the .exe and then open mapsource or basecamp. i just did and the maps are there listed as Cen Rut v 2.3. the maps are routeable! i think mac has built in software to un-rar (if not use stuffit) , but this map installer might be windows only.

The cenrut.org project has some nice maps but their installer is Windows only. They need to rethink that.
UPDATE: I found a link to a Mac Install version on the CenRut.org forum - if you need it. Cheers,

Costa Rica GPS Maps
I just downloaded the CenRut into MapSource and as I was comparing the Osa Penninsula area on CenRut to Google Maps, I noticed many discrepancies.
It looks like there is alot of information missing especially in this area. I too would like to take my Garmin 2610 to Costa Rica, but I am not sure how well this will work. I will try it and let you know in the next couple months. |

I just did exactly the same thing! I loaded it into my Nuvi 1200, and I will be heading to the Oso next week! Where will you be coming from, what will you be riding, and what are your plans?

Anyway, let me know when you get back what you discover. I would appreciate that very much. PM me if you wish. -Iris ps. IMHO.....for the post above, I have not heard very many good reviews on the GPSTravelMaps to date. Perhaps they are better now, but I have no experience with them myself. |
