Did a similar treatment to my Honda CB750. Huge difference. Would also do steering head bearings too if at all possible. Those combined with progressive springs/shocks has yielded the best handling motorcycle I have ever owned.

I updated (err, well... still updating, really) my bike in bits and chunks. I can say the biggest single change came with the bronze swingarm bushings. Nothing else came close. More power here and there with carbs and pods, better handling with shocks and bearings, more reliability with ignition and charging upgrades, so on, so forth. But: New bushings = totally new and better handling. I dunno how the needle bearings compare, but the bronze bushings upgrade should be the first thing you change.

Just found half a circlip on the sump plug while dropping the oil out,
motor now coming out for a good look-see, easier to work on anyway!

As promised; photos of motor surgery,

two half washers [on left] found on sump plug

Culprit is on the left [right photo] - has been squashed flat allowing the collet washers to fall out!

circlip pliers show position of kickstart gearing behind clutch basket

MikesXS bottom filter;- worth it's weight in gold!

Stuffed clutch plates, guess it happens after 45k hard kilometers!

made of steel & works a treat! bashplate shows 'war wounds'

K460 Dunlop [16"] - my favourite tyre, others used Dunlop 606 [18"], Chenshin [19"] & Metzler ME880 [16"]

All the gear is on the way from MikesXS, so for the time being I'm hooting around on my '81 Special 'Tourer',

might even stick the trailer on behind for next weekend's rally

That is really nice looking. Much less 80's factory chopper looking than most Specials I've seen. Are the bars stock? Looks like aftermarket pipes? Any other details you can share?

Thanks! Those are Bikemaster "European" bars. The pipes are stock. It has a Saddlemen seat cover, fork gaiters for a Triumph, an XJ750 front rotor, braided brake lines, and the chain guard is painted black. Other than that it is mostly stock, and still has the original paint on the tank and side covers. Thanks! I just looked through the photo gallery. Excellent job! I have been looking for a good deal on a standard, but after seeing what you were able to do with yours with just a few minor changes, I may take another look at the more common specials that I see for sale around here.

They sure are easier to find. One suggestion is to look for a '78 or '79 Special. Basically, they are about half way between a standard and the '80 and up Specials. They still have the side hinged seat, metal side covers, the BS38 carbs, and a standard style tail light, so easier to make a roadster from.

I have a project '75 standard, and when I first got this '79 I was really surprised how close they were, and I actually like the looks of the slimmer Special tank better. While I prefer the 18"/19" spoke wheels on the '75, the overall height of the 16" rear wheel is about the same as the 18". It has more side wall than the 18", so a little heavier, but handles fine. It feels like my SR500 on the backroads.

I was surprised how well behaved a Special is on dirt, given the right tyres of course!

I run Dunlop K460 x 16" on rear, Dunlop K70 19" on front, great combo for all round riding, tar & dirt
