When I see pictures and hear stories like this, it brings up a lot of mixed feelings.

Gratitude...gratitude for the fact that people like your nephew chose to serve and give of themselves for their team, for those in foreign lands, and for their families back home. Despite what is on the news, the average Iraqi, the average Afghani...they are deeply appreciative of what we are doing for them.

Sadness...sadness for the family members left behind.

Pride...pride in knowing that your nephew and others like him did not die in vain. They went doing something they believe in for people that are closer than any other...their brothers and sisters in arms.

Responsibility...In a very short time I'll be deployed again and will be responsible for bringing home safely the men I lead.

It's sobering to see these pictures. If something happens to me, there's not much I can do about it. Whether I come home alive and kicking, missing some parts, or in a box, I've made peace with those possibilities. What I cannot make peace with is the thought that I will knowingly be putting my men's lives on the line, every day, and it's possible that not all of them will make it home. Every time we roll out, every time we're on a mission, every time we lay our heads down at night...every minute of every day, I will be responsible for the lives of men like your nephew. We have a job to do downrange and I'll do everything I can to accomplish that, because in doing so, it may just keep others from having to deploy in the future. But first and foremost is my responsibility to my men. It is not a responsibility that I or any other leader take lightly.

My hope and my prayer: I pray that I can bring my men home safely, and I hope that in doing so I will earn the trust of the mothers and fathers giving me their sons for a year.

I'm thankful for your nephew's service.

I hope that my gender-specific use of the word "men" didn't offend anyone...there are tens or even hundreds of thousands of great and brave women serving. I know this because I've worked with some of them. But I happen to be part of an all-male organization.
Soldierguy, thanks for your service and your condolences. And thanks for sharing your thoughts on a difficult job. The men you are responsible for are very fortunate judging from the concerns reflected in your remarks above. It is a good indication that you and they will come home safely. We will keep you in our thoughts.

we had a cool opportunity to help a client recreate his dad's classic motorcycle picture. I think we found a good spot along our route to Lake Atitlan:

My Sons

This is a ride we did on the weekend. 2 of my sons, 2 of my brothers and my nephew. The great thing is my brother lost his son to MD 4 years ago and his wife 2 years ago and after 30 years bought a Honda 1300. Suits him.

Just came across this video. I think it says it all as far as fathers, sons and motorcycles.
