RIP Patrice Martinez

I only got to know about this a few days ago from Marc....

Strangely enough, a couple days before, I had sent a text message to my my buddy David Castera, race director of the Dakar, congratulating him that that there had been no fatal casualties this year......

Was I wrong....

Patrice and Marc from Los Angeles, were down there in Argentina and Chile doing a great adv ride and to also see the Dakar!

One day, on a dirt road, a car of two Brasilian tourists was coming the other way and lost control. Marc who was leading was barely able to avoid them, Patrice right behind got hit.

RIP Patrice, gone doing what he loved, but still...gone too soon!

This is like a bad dream. I met Patrice and Marc on the plane to Lima when I was flying back to Cusco. They were picking up bikes in La Paz to head to Arica. I told them I decided not to chase the Dakar this year due to my going home but exchanged e-mails to stay in touch.

We had an awesome conversation on the plane and I looked forward to hooking up with them at a later date.

I have no words.

edit: this probably doesn't belong in RR but I'll let GB decide where to put it.

Very sorry to hear about your friends. I had thought they had a remarkable year too. RIP Patrice.
Hillary, it would be like Frasier being elected president; only uglier.

This is terrible, shocking news.
