Buying hot-weather riding gear in Houston, Tx.
Hope y’all can help. (My first post, so please be gentle with me if I have posted in the wrong place!)
I’m from Scotland, living & working in tropical Malaysia & riding my R1200GS here. Local temperatures are 80-100F year round & humid. I bought an ‘AlpineStars’ vented jacket locally from a reputable bike dealer, then wanted another for a friend. By that time, I had found the AlpineStars official store & went to get another jacket – and found out mine was a copy. When I checked the ‘armor’ it was hard foam. So I don’t buy safety gear locally any more. I will be passing through Houston, Tx in February – based Downtown – just flying in & out on a job. If I can squeeze in a 1/2 –day off, can anyone recommend a shop to buy 1. a good vented/armored jacket? – Icon looks good online, but I would rather try on for size, also 2. On/off-road boots (recommendations?) & 3. a replacement Arai Tour-X/XD (that one I could get online, I know my size). Thanks! Bob |

Hey there Zeroh,
welcome to the site and hope someone can help you out with your troubles. You may want to start a new thread in this section just to ask for some locations of some good ride gear shops. Everyone will be glad to help out. Does the jacket totally suck or is it just the armor that's the problem? You can buy aftermarket armor pieces to replace that foam stuff if you are happy with the rest of the jacket. Enjoy your travels! Keep an eye on this forum as your travel dates near and you may find some local ADV idiots who will be more than happy to buy you a beer when you are in town.

Several places that have riding gear in the local Houston area, the first two have a larger selection, and I'm sure there are others.....

Slowoldguy - you're right
dfwscotty - I would if I could - but I didn't even see how to upload a picture I did replace the armor with Knox CE from the UK - a couple of weeks later the main zip has gone - that's getting replaced, but basically the quality just isn't there. grneggz - that is exactly what I was looking for - I will check them out - do what I can online & organize the rest for whatever time off I get. Thanks all! |

Hi from San Antonio
Hey all,
MadV here, riding a Tiger 800XC. Looking for other riders around here that know the area. I've seen the Texas Hill Country rides thread, but that usually starts up in Austin. I might be able to make 1x every two months...so I'm looking for other inmates that are familiar with the SA area. Cheers, MadV |

Gary, I'm right next to ya in Aledo. Although, riding time has been difficult for me lately, I'm working on that.
Maybe able to break away in the afternoons sometimes. PM me sometime and we'll hit some area roads Barclay

I live in abilene, tx. I am always up to go riding whether it be trails or county roads. Right now I am mapping out a route from Abilene to San Saba using county roads and FM roads and plan on going in the middle of may.
