So, after all 139 pages and the original post in Feb 2011, I wonder how many people have been saving for the WC Boxer vs those diving for a cycle loan.

Not me. I've saved up for a '13 GSA Camhead. Should be here in about a month.

In 5-6 years when/if they get the kinks and glitches worked out of the WC's and the aftermarket parts suppliers have caught up, I might trade it in on one then - but I doubt it.

I am a cash buyer. However I think I'll wait a year or so for the demand to level off. I wouldn't pay full price which I imagine they will be asking when the gs/gsa is first released. Hope it is a vastly better motorcycle.

Ditto this. New '12 home next week. No way I wanted to be a beta tester for the newest bigger better WC version. Been there dome that. Hopefully they've got the gremlins worked out on this model by now.

The new Hydrohead is bound to be a big hit IMHO!
... and at one stage everyone was saying it would never happen and the boxer was dead, long live the boxer.

So, riddle me this.

BMW started their Boxer engine with air cooling in mind, then evolved into an 'oil radiator' of sorts. When the Boxer goes water cooled, what will be the advantage of two wide opposed cylinders hanging out in the breeze?

'Course one advantage is to lower the CG, but with water cooling is that layout necessary (as BMW has disproven in the 800GS), and does the Boxer format become more questionable?

Looks cool, it's a nod to history, much less prone to overheating than hidden away cylinders...
I own my GS for the same reason I own my HD. It's not the performance, it's the vehicle designed around a motor rather than hiding it away.

Maybe you misunderstand me. I'm not referencing the current air cooled twin. I'm calling to mind that when they transition to water cooling, does it make sense to have an opposed (wide) engine that was originally designed for air cooling?

Or should the engine layout then morph into further advantages based on what the GS itself represents (high torque, reliability, emissions concerns, etc)?

I was discussing the same questions you have with a riding buddy just the other day. The only reason I can see is that BMW realizes the backlash from us Boxer diehards and this is their attempt to keep the best selling model at the top ?

I dunno, perhaps with the heads still out in the air they can design the cooling system to be smaller and perhaps keep the weight down a bit ?

The current Cam in head Boxer motor first came out in '10, actually the basic design goes back to 1923. The BMW Boxer motor has seen continous improvements since then. The '14 GSA will utilize the air/oil cooled Cam head engine while the '14 GS will have the water cooled engine.
