Re the oil question, no doubt a Synthetic oil as BMW engines are progressing towards closer tolerances and more consistant engine temps etc.

For those of you that have the totally mistaken belief that you can only use a synthetic after so many miles, this new waterboxer will no doubt come from the factory initially with synthetic.

Old wives tales do seem to persist however.

LED issue Stateside is still a work in progress. Suffice to say that I did see a row of small LEDs on the standard headlight array that are used as daytime running lights, that appears to be allowed, but according to the designer, and who would know better, they are still waiting for the US DOT to change the regulations to allow LED for use as the full headlight system. That is not to say that this will not happen by the time they hit these shores, but knowing how slow legislative change takes place, I doubt that they will rush it through just for the sake of BMW motorcycles. Having said that, it would be a very expensive retrofit and likely not allowed to be sold through BMW NA parts anyway. Did that Ducati have running lights or a full system?

This situation is similar to reasons why the BMW System helmets are not sold in the US, but area old just across the invisible border to the north. DOT appears to be the stumbling block.

My wife's new Mercedes CLS550 has full LED headlights, so there is precedent for this in the US (and we're in California). I'm sure it's just a matter of BMW submitting the required paperwork and testing.

I am sure my dark tinted GSA windscreen ( BMW pn#71607708532 ) is not DOT spec. They offer it in EU but not here. I ordered one anyways through MAX. To them it is a part they can sell for money, they aren't concerned with legalities of its use. And unless I get pulled over and the officer is a dick, I will most likely skate on that detail. What is the difference between driving around with your high beam on or an overly bright LED unit? With all the knuckleheads running around with 100w Silver stars, HID's or superbright bulbs, I think the chances of getting pulled over for a LED headlight are slim to none. As far as the expense to retrofit, the only deciding factor is the thickness of your wallet (or whether your wife will let you).

Think it will boil down to a corporate risk management thing, being a importer of various vehicles, don't think BMW wants to be exposed to lawsuits for small issues. They just want to be squeaky clean and not risk coming under DOT scrutiny. Case in point, when I bought my new System 6 helmet this summer, BMW Canada made me explicitly sign papers promising to not sel/givel it to any US citizens under any circumstances. Not sure how much weight that carries, but they seem to be really anal about these things. As far as a dealer selling a non-Dot approved windshield, it would be BMW NA that controls the distribution within the US. Where individual dealers get their stock from unofficially is up to them I suppose, at their peril of losing their dealership I suppose. Time will tell, however the importers in the countries are free to configure their options packages to suit their individual demographics, hence, a safety package in Canada may include the LED package as part of it while in the US it may not.

Short of an LED headlight unit being so unreliable or impossible to maintain aim that it was subject to mandated recall, I can't imagine that BMW would have any liability for a headlight unit that had DOT approval. Now, I'd you're talking about trying to sneak it through channels to retrofit it, I suspect they'd take a dim view.

I'm thinking that DOT would be no hurry approving new technology from importers in general.
If Harley would invent (and the have) things would go quicker; in a way DOT also controls access to the US market and if its not DOT it won't sell in the US.
