New guy here, been lurking for about a year now which is around the same amount of time I have been researching a new bike for myself. Of the four bikes I was looking at the new R1200GS was the only one to fulfill all criteria I had established. I decided to go and place a deposit down at Capitol BMW in Raleigh, NC and I ended up being the first person on the waitlist there. Could not be more excited for the spring to get here!

Well it's not really about cooling, it's about temperature control, heat management and their effect on mechanical design. There are plenty of ways to get more hp. The old GS did not work just fine with oil circulating. Oil has a lot of heat capacity but is a poor conductor and so it absorbs and releases heat slowly. The job of the water is to absorb the heat and conduct and transfer it to the radiator where it can be dumped into the atmosphere. The oil heads had no temperature control, just a secondary method of dissipating heat. The function is not cooling anymore than it is heating. The system simply allows for the control of engine temperature to keep it within the design parameters of the engine. If the engineer has some assurance that the temperature will be controlled between a specific pair of set points then the design tolerances can be refined. In addition there is some ability to accurately predict what the emissions will be. My guess would be that the European emission standards are what is driving this change more than any other factors. For myself though, I will welcome the reduced noise and vibration that the tighter engine tolerances will bring.

Regarding the Multi-Controller ...

I had a brief email exchange with the guy who took the youtube video we've been looking at.
