No new owner bias here, the test ride sold me on the bike. I've owned a number of BMWs as well, so no brand bias either. Yamaha started with a clean sheet of paper in designing this bike and really did its homework. You should take one for a test ride.

Yes, the GS is a great bike to carry a passenger long distances. the continually improving adjustable suspension really help that too.

You erroneously presume i have not ridden in the dirt. I do admit that as an old fart I do little of that now, but for many years I was an active enduro rider and competed in New England Trail rider events. Enduros in those days, before some many land closures and other rules, consisted of a marked trees thru the woods(no trail), up brooks, across fields. the A level riders started first with only those signs (many got lost but that was part of the challenge), the B riders came next, by the time the C riders came you could call it a single track route. (ps my best bike for this was a 220lb Bultaco)

While I have not ridden the new GS, I have ridden earlier versions, a 2011 last summer most recently. I've traveled a bit too, many of the remote northern roads in all of the canadian provinces(except nunavit sp?))..alaska too.

I do like the looks of the wasser boxer....will be going to the NYC show to see it.

I think you misunderstood, I never presumed anything about your riding history...simply suggested that you ride the NEW GS in the dirt before you make up your mind about its capabilities.

You started out in the correct direction, by replacing the tires before riding in the sand.
But you're basically only half way.
I think you forgot to replace the rear tire

Every time I tried to lift it the front end walked away from me.
I know it says Gelände und Strasse but I think you should chose one or the other for your tires

One nice thing about having bought a Rallye edition camhead this spring is that there'll probably be a special edition of the wethead by the time I can afford one.

It would be nice if I could blame the tires, but this was 100% rider error.

Error 1a: it was a hard pack road with little sand or gravel. This road could easily be done on a powered wheelchair. It was so easy I wasn't paying attention. I was sitting on the saddle, not standing on the pegs, and most emphatically not looking where I was going.

Error 1b: Not looking resulted in the bike aiming for the only spot of maybe 2" deep soft stuff on the entire road.

Error2: When I finally noticed where I was going I cut power to ensure that the front end would dig in as deep as possible into the little sand that existed.

The pig is heavy. The new LC sounds like it will be just as heavy. I can only hope that if I'm going to keep doing stupid stuff like that the LC will be easier to pick up.

This setup (street rear with knobby front) is how many riders roll, especially in western USA... The long distances eat the rear knobbies, and the front wheel is the one that benefits most from the added traction.

Back slides can be controlled but if the front washes out you usually crash. That said, I prefer knobbies on both ends for offroading.
