ok, this is becoming a tutorial of sorts, for me at least. on the last bike (dark grey) are those late model k1100rs side covers? will they direct fit to earlier tanks/bodywork? - a better resolve to covering up the innards i think....

A bit hard to make out in that pic but they appear to be shortened K1100RS side covers. Should work on any K100 or K75RT. (Not K75/C/S though.)

The stock K1100RS battery covers go all of the way to the inner knee panels.

You can see it here on the world's coolest, fastest K1100RS.

Edit: The K11RS (and LT) side covers slip over a post at the rear so you'd also need to put a bolt through the hole on the earlier Ks and then cover it with some vacuum hose for the rear mounting. (BTDT when the post broke off on my LT.)

I've heard tell that the front end of a CBX11 (I could be completely wrong with the model designation there) bolts right up to K-Bikes and offers a fantastic upgrade in handling. But until I buy the 100/1100, I'll get by with this frankenbrick...

Plans to go full-retard and turn it in to a long-distance tourer are in effect.
