Poor 84Blue, I think he melted today. I thought of you today as I rode home from work. The heat was radiating off the payment, even the wind was hot.
If you solidify, maybe we can ride part way up there together. I live in St. Paul and could meet with you on 35E. Looks like MNrider2 is riding up but I don't know if he is game to leave Friday. Maybe we could have lunch in Danbury or at the casino. "Ya, Anyone can come."
Target has a cheap Kelty 2-person tent and a sleeping bag I think I will buy. The tent and sleeping bag should fit on my rack easily. Tools on my fender pack. And clothes in my backpack. I should be pretty light. I don't think I'll need a rainjacket, should be sunny all weekend.
On Saturday hopefully I can get something for the evening meal.
Should I get new tires for the weekend. If most people are on bigger Dual-sports (KLR650) and Adventure bikes I think I will be okay. Is anyone planning on single track, deep mud or "Beartooth Pass"?

I might be able to make this one for the morning, especially if the dirt roads head to Grand Marais by mid afternoon. If Arrowhead is around, he knows a river crossing on the 600 Road near Heartbreak Hill that sounds kool.

My daughter is getting married Saturday afternoon. However, she, her mom, and some of the wedding party are running Grandma's in the morning. They won't even know that I'm gone....

I know how unreal this sounds.... I'll know that I can duck out for a bit when I get on the bike.

I wish I would have known sooner, I was up on the land all week, unfortunately, I am at MSP heading to SF as I type this! I'll be back in the area June 15-30th. Swing by if you are around!

Sounds good. I'll definitely be passing by...even if I don't want to be.

Regarding gear, just be damn sure to bring something warm for the evenings. And be careful what weather forcast you look at - it's not the same from just a few miles inland to the shore. Even on the local news, we'll get the general forcast with the disclaimer "cooler by the lake." Right on the shore (where jwalters property is) this time of year, we frequently struggle to get into the 50's for daytime highs - nighttime temps can be significantly lower. Yeah, get just over the hill and it might be 80, but we're sitting on this giant icebox they call Gitchi Gumi.

I'm not sure what everyone else will be riding, nor the terrain desired. I've only got my KLX250S, and I'd love to hit some more challenging terrain - but there's really not all that much of that around here (legally accessible anyway) (depending on your definition of challenging). You're likely to see plenty of dirt/gravel roads, logging roads, and maybe some ATV/Snowmobile trail. I think you'll be fine on any decent condition dual sport tire, no need for a fresh knobby. Actually, if your tires are too good, you might eliminate too much of the challenge - it's (almost) always more fun when there's a distinct possibility that you'll crash or get stuck.

I could give you two directions to the whyte road. That could be interesting!

I am going up on friday and would like to meet for lunch and ride up together.
We could take some backroads from Danbury to Duluth and stay off 35W.

Have a safe trip Jesse!

Thanks!

PS. I'm still hoping some of you locals can help with a ride Saturday.

Note to self, next, year I'll ask for which type of bikes folks are bringing so we can anticipate the type of riding. Live and learn...

Oh yeah, I forgot about that one! That's up off the Stony River forest road or something isn't it? I haven't ridden on it, but I have driven a car up to it. From what i recall it looks, uhh, muddy, and there's a sign says you'll need a 4x4 or high clearance vehicle or something like that. Now I want to get back up there on the bike! Want to "guide" another trip? Misery loves company, and I hate pulling out a stuck bike by myself.

I would be happy to either lay out a route or just offer suggestions. I know the area well.Your proposed route looks good with a couple suggestions. Instead of county 6 to finland maybe head to tofte then north to the grade. The gravel around Finland is horrible. Large, slippery and loose. Also you show going north of Devil track Lake on county road 154. I am not positive but doubt that you can make it through back to the Gunflint trail. Depending on how far everyone wants to ride a loop north of greenwood lake and on to the arrowhead trail and continuing further to grand portage would be a lot of fun. Possibly lunch at trail center rather than grand marais? Just some thoughts. Whatever we all decide I know it will be fun!

I'll vouch for that statement. I ride it frequently as part of my work commute. Kinda like marbles on a basketball court. Can't help but for the bike to move around a lot underneath you...and it can get a little unnerving at times. I kinda like it, but that's just me.

On the other hand, the scenery is good through there.

I have to say I'm out.
Best case is I can come up for Saturday only, won't know that until last second.

Enjoy everyone.

Hello from somewhere in Nevada.

I'm hoping to be back on the North shore in a couple days. I'll be picking up some food for everyone, so it would be helpful if you plan to attend to let me know so I can add you to the IN list. The opposite is also true, if your plans have changed and you can't make it, please let me know that as well!

Thanks! Looking forward to it!
