2 new Shindiggers

Gregg Brooksbank and Matt Thibedeau from Marine on Saint Croix will be coming but staying at Gregg's cabin in Lutsen. Contact them thru me till Gregg has his 14 year old son help him sign on to the board.

They will be riding XT 250's or big GS bikes or both! At the same time?!

Got'em on the list! Tom, you're going to have to sneak away from the Art Show for at least an afternoon ride!

Okay, I spent a lot of time looking for the photo of the guy we need to kidnap, and He's taken it down from Smugmug. So if he could post the picture so everyone can get a really good description. Yes Tommymerle, you know the picture.

Iphone GPS help

Regarding scouting, I may have a little time Sunday or next weekend. Some part days during next week might work too (I might make a "long commute" of it).

Where are we at with the red tracks? I've finally figured out how to use the GPS capabilities of my iPhone, since I don't have a dedicated GPS. It's not ideal, but it seems to be workable as such for following and recording tracks, so I should be able to do some solo proving if need be. Last update here from Cannonshot (which I have downloaded) showed a big 80-plus mile loop between my place and Brimson - if that's not done yet, I can easily knock it off the list soon (looks to be easy gravel and pavement). The remaining ones between Isabella and the border I'd like to ride along in some joint efforts if the timing works. Heck, I might even be convinced to just ride on known ground.
What offline map app did you download for your iPhone Lutz?

I downloaded MotionX GPS (not MotionX Drive), and at this point it looks close to working stand alone. It's reviewed quite positively, and from what I've seen so far, it is as capable as I need for the moment (considering the app is only $0.99).

If you have cell or WiFi reception, it allows you the option of using the native MotionX Road and MotionX Terrain maps, as well as Bing maps (including the excellent Bing satellite) or Apple maps. NOAA Marine is the only other map available in the program.

If you don't have cell or WiFi access, if you've previously downloaded the MotionX maps, they are still available to you offline. You can't access the Bing or Apple maps offline, unfortunately.

As a GPS in the wilds, this seems to work as well as I'd expect it to at this point (which is to say quite well) - after all, it's just another GPS. The iPhone seems to pick up satellite signal as well as my Garmin Nuvi 1200 car gps does.

The process of downloading .gpx files is easy...you just need access to email or iTunes to do it, so it's got to be done ahead of time or with cell or WiFi connection present. One big loss in translation is that the track colors that Cannonshot has embedded in his .gpx files don't come through on the iPhone...I have adapted to that by reading the .gpx file in Microsoft Notepad to find what color each track is supposed to be, and then changing the color of each track in MotionX GPS on the phone. This is tedious at best, but definitely workable (hey, I'm dealing with a $0.99 piece of software on a company provided phone...I'll deal with a little extra work in this case).

Something I may look at in the near future is how I can doctor the information in the .gpx files to ease the crossover between platforms; aka Garmin to MotionX, back to Garmin. I'd like to cut out so much manual work of changing track colors to match what others are using, and vise versa. ...But I bet there's already an app for that.

Tom,
If you see Will Ferrell in a black van around Lutsen/Grand Marais, be afraid. Very afraid!

You know, if we play this wrong, that picture could be misconstrued as a ransom picture.

this is somewhere in Cook County. Please note the green sign above the rider's (who shall remain nameless) head.
