Car Tyres for Sidecars

We can now supply Bridgestone Potenza RE040 175/55/17 car tyres from the UK to the US, Canada and Australia.

These fit straight on to a standard 17" rear bike wheel in place of the usual 180/55/17 bike tyre. Due to the unique size, they do not foul swingarms / fenders etc. in the vast majority of cases.

Longevity is hugely increased, it's always hard to quote figures as we are all different, but cars get 30,000 miles out of these, I've seen bikes do 15,000 to 20,000 miles. Some people suggest more. I've just been told some people get 30,000 miles on the bike!

They do not seem to be available in the US or Australia and there has been some discussion on these in the Hacks forum.

You'll need a 5.5 width wheel rim which would normally take a 180 section tyre.

I think the DL1000 is narrower?

It is,it takes a 150.BUT many people are useing a 205 series tire on the strom so wouldn't a 175 be narrower??.

Yes it's narrower.

I'm surprised to hear people are fitting 205 section tyres to the standard rear wheel, especially if it's less than a 5.5 width wheel.

The good thing about the 175 is that it doesn't foul anything.

Had one of these in the rear of my 1100 kawasaki, it used to spin up bike tyres on roundabouts when weight transferred to the chair wheel, this cured it and it didnt seem to wear AT ALL.

Keep 'em in stock Rod - I had a sod of a job getting one last year. The factory stopped making them for a while. I think they are the space saver tyre on the sporty little Vauxhall.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll build up a stock.

The Vauxhall VX220 uses them as the standard front tyre.

If you had one that for a 4x17 wheel (1150GS;1200GS) then you'd have a winner!

you will see that the same tyre fits these wheels apparently, I have no direct experience of this myself. Pictures of both 1150 and 1200 GS.

I thought you said in Post 3 above that the tires only fit wheels 5.5". But you were talking about the Strom. Confusing.

So you and Richard NL agree that the 175/55/17 fits on a standard BMW GS 17" rear wheel? Cool! That's what I got on my sidecar. I wouldn't mind a bigger footprint primarily to give me more grab in a panic braking situation. Not to mention that a car tire there would probably last longer than the bike!

Sorry for the confusion, my own direct experience is of 5.5" wheels and I've only seen them on those. But Richard has them on his GS as you can see in the photos and I have since discovered that many people use these on narrower rims.
