My friend, thread drift is all part of the price of participation, and sometimes leads to good insight to boot.

"Drift" is fine, but cluttering it up with non-relevant stuff just makes the thread appear huge and important and....wait....maybe thats a good thing too..?

Nothing makes a "thing" appear to be huge and important more than loud pipes.

Hello,

I have owned a '05 R1200GS for more than a year and I hate the amount of noise this bike makes. If anyone has discovered a way to quiet this beast, I would be happy to know how.

The sound is the only aspect of my 2010 GSA that I don't care for. If I was only riding to the local Starbucks it wouldn't be so bad, but my trips generally last a week or two. Just wondering if the noise is going to add to the fatigue factor

We need it!

The noise of the new stock exhaust to cover up all the mechanical clatter of a GS12. Maybe we won't have to listen to that on the new water cooled. Thats what peeves me off the most about Beamers. Racket coming from a $23,000. motorcycle. My $6000. XRL was quieter.

I think BMW has sold their soul on this issue. One friend had to get an '09 because the '10 hurt his ears (he has hearing damage). Another has a new '11 but is increasingly dissatisfied with the sound. Another recently went on a long ride with another rider on an '11 and mentioned the noise specifically.

WTF, BMW? Let the aftermarket deal with loud pipes; don't force them down our throats. To dictate that new GS riders simply don't have a quiet option any more is just incredible.

I never expected to find a thread like this on ADV, but clearly we aren't the only ones who feel this way.

Thumb You're all crazy!

I bought my '10 because of the nice sound!! Finally a BMW that actually sounds like a motorcycle and not a sewing machine going down the road. Yes I wear ear plugs too. It can hardly be called 'loud' that is for sure.

I'll add to it..

I have mild tinitus, I'd like to keep it mild for as long as possible.
My 2011 GSA is TOO LOUD for me. Even with ear plugs, feh...

I have a Givi AF330 on my Adventure.
It really cuts down on the wind noise so you can clearly hear the exhaust.
When I stick my head out from behind the screen at road speed, into the airflow, the airflow roar trumps the exhaust roar.

If you have a standard GS with the standard screen you probably don't notice it as much.
The wind noise, and maybe the actual air flow, serve to remove or mask the exhaust boom.
I don't know, does increased airflow around the helmet actually diminish the ability of the sound waves of the exhaust from coming up to the riders helmet?
Thoughts anybody??

Sitting behind the same screen on my '05, '06 and '08 R1200GSs I was very pleased with the sound levels. Which is to say pretty freaking quiet. I'd still wear earplugs for most any ride.

And as always, beauty is in the eye, in this case ears, of the beholder.

Man - I love the sound of mine! Sweet music. One of the plus factors in buying it was I didn't have to spend an extra grand for an aftermarket exhaust.

Dharma, didn't you read from the beginning? This thread is for those who don't like the sound of the DOHC exhaust note!!!!

I like the sound too (snicker).
