![]() Oh ... sorry ... uh seriously ... I don't know why it's so hard.... ![]() Seems like the program could be "google-map-like" and then be smart enough to sprinkle in a few extra waypoints on it's own at intersections and so-on to avoid re-calc. issues if you checked the little option box that said: "don't dick with this route - I want to go from A to B along the path that's displayed HERE" Ok ... mini-rant complete ... off to work.................... |

Exactly. I have read it here many, many times. Garmin makes a "motorcycle GPS" designed with bikers in mind, blah blah blah. When you go to use it you find that the #1 reason, yes the single reason I bought the thing, is nearly impossible to accomplish without using external websites and infinite work-arounds. Nice. |

The easiest way...
I found this:
Just go to: http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input And there put the URL of your google map: For example: http://goo.gl/maps/n0lsp Select GPX as output format, and that is it... just copy and paste the file generated, import it in basecamp and that is all. It worked like a charm. |

Wow ... looks slick, I need to load the new version of basecamp and try it. If you have tried this, I have a question: If you go "off-route" by taking a wrong turn or whatever, what happens? Does it steer you back to the programmed route ... or does it recalculate and plot a new course to your destination... or does it pull some other tricke and something else...

I have come to the conclusion that I am too stupid to try to use a 60CSx for anything but a paperweight. I tried to create a route in BaseCamp, to a place I don't know how to get to, which is why I bought a GPS, and it hands me a pencil and tells me to draw a route to the place I don't know how to get to.
FML. The HD tool works a lot better, but can anybody tell me how to search for, find, mark a location and then have the GPS route me to it, in BaseCamp? And yes, I watched the tutorial, It told me to draw the route to the place I don't know how to get to. Feeling technophobic about now. I can get lost with paper maps a lot cheaper. I tried the above map conversion, but I can't even figure out how to make a Google Map to import. There's my route, all pretty, but when I cut n paste the link it says that its not a GPS map. 1911fan

Microsoft Streets & Trips?
Has anyone tried Microsoft Streets & Trips?
It's only about $30 and has some nice route planning tools... It claims to download to GPS, but does it really? I realize this won't help with off-road routing ... but what about touring? |

Thanks jdg ....
I wasn't expecting this GPS thing to be quite this "messy" ... Lots of options, none of which really seem to be a self-contained swiss-army-knife solution ... sheezzzzzzzzzzzzz I guess I want too much.... ![]() I had high hopes for Basecamp as well, installed V3 and it just made me cuss, have not yet installed V4 as I figured I'd "review other options" first... Thanks for the heads up! I'm planning 5.5K mile trip this summer and I'm using MS 2013 to plan the routes (no off-roading). I was thinking about getting TomTom Rider (new version is out and it's using "Tyre"), but I pulled the trigger on 665 instead (I want the SiriusXM features).
Thus far, planning routes in MS'13 is not too hard, but I hate the fact that you can't create multiple routes at once (at least I haven't been able to figure out a way). Therefore, my trip is one big route with ~130-150 waypoints. 665 should be arriving in the next 2-3 weeks or so, so I hope to test it out and report on the ability to export MS'13 GPX file to Zumo 665. I did try exporting GPX into Tyre (or even Google Maps) one before and I believe all the waypoints were transferred, but no routes (only straight lines similar to the issue that the OP ran into on the first page)... I didn't realize there's a way to "snap it to the roads," but will try and see what happens... |

Tyre was the only thing that made the Rider even remotely usable for other than freeway centric travel. jdg

The next big thing I'm looking for is route optimization software that is external to the GPS. I know some of the new units have an "eco" mode, but I want to do that before stuffing the route into the unit and being surprised at the result.

However, a few things worth mentioning (as for right now): -it only comes with 4GB internal memory -it does NOT support SD/microSD cards -does not have MP3, but it does have Bluetooth (not sure if it's AD2P) -does have summary trip and track trip -comes with Tyre program (already free, but it's probably better integrated) -offers "Winding Roads" (it will find the roads with most bends for you)* *depending on your route Estimated cost is roughly $510 and probably will be offered in the US at the end of Q1/Q2 I was waiting for it to come out, but I pulled the trigger on 665LM... If I understand you correctly, Microsoft Street & Trips (ST) has "Optimize Route" option. I used it while planning my route, but the only major thing I noticed was that the route was planned clockwise vs the original plan. For example, the original plan was to travel from Ohio to Maine via Connecticut and return home via Niagara Falls and ST "optimized" it so that I go to Maine via Niagara and return home via CT. Granted, I didn't pay too much attention to times (not sure if you're familiar with the program, but it does calculate the times between each stop/waypoint for you).
