Well, this is my last scout report before the RDV... I think.
This time I found a new observation point/dual sport trail on my last scout ride on 5/11/11.
I almost always find something new every time I ride the area NW of Laurel Springs. I hope everyone attending the rally, has a chance to get out and do some exploring.

On the way over to Laurel springs I stopped off in the mountains and got some snake venom.... I know what you were thinking.

Nope, not that kind. Although it probably not that hard to get.

Here is the new senic overlook.

Road improvements currently under way is the area.

I had ridden by this place many, many times. I had no idea what they had to offer. So today I had a little extra time and decided to check it out.

It has a beautiful campground with a lake and beach area.
Bear Tree campground, off RT. 58 just outside of Damascus Va.

Oh yea! I forgot to mention, keep an eye out for a local nortorious sherrif from western North Carolina. He is bad news.

His side kick on the other hand is from Minnesota, she's a hoot.

Time to start scouting again.

I am planning a scout ride on Wed. the 25th (Jan.)

If anyone wants to meet and ride, we can meet in Shady Valley TN, Damascus Va, Mountain City Tn or White Top Va. area. I will be scouting the area NW of Laurel Springs. This is really just an excuse to go ride.

Well, looks like I had a taker for yesterdays the scout ride

.....Cuttle met me in Shady valley and we set out for Damascus via a couple of nice dual sport roads. (this would be a nice way to go from Damascus to Shady valley with minimal tarmac.) From Damascus, take "Government Road", at the end take a left, then turn Left on McQueen Gap road/Harr rd. Then right on HWY 133 to Shady valley.(this route does not show up on Google maps

My camera died today so Cuttle loaned me some pics for today's ride.

From there we checked on a couple trail heads, Iron MT road.

Too rough for the tiger, not today

Good spot for lunch. (also a good spot to check out the new character marks that I put on the crash bars

) note to self, at least air down when running these tires on wet leaves

Then it was off in search of new abandoned railroad.

Shortly beyond this point there is a locked gate

Found some new gravel in the area...Its was freshly groomed and still very fast

Just subscribed. If you go out scouting again maybe I'll get a chance to meet up with you.

I did a bit of exploring yesterday too. It was great, but I ended up in places that I shouldn't have been riding alone. I need to pack a tool/tire kit too. Cash will usually get you out of a bind on the road, but it isn't worth a damn when there's not a house in sight, and aren't even sure which state you're in.

When the weather cooperates a little more. It's a 300 mi. round trip from here. I'll probably drive up the night before an camp. But yes, sounds like fun!

In that case, bring the KTM and I'll bring the KLR (rat) and we can do the really good stuff.

Todd, that's up in my neck of the woods. I can't wait to get the DRZ up there to explore. It opens up much more with a smaller bike. At least I can run them first with the DRZ then take the GS through, knowing there's a way out.
